Umar Khalid attack: Delhi court sends two suspects to two-day police custody
The men had claimed in a video clip that they had attacked the student leader as an Independence Day gift to the people.
A Delhi court on Tuesday sent two men to police custody for two days after they were arrested in connection with the attack on student leader Umar Khalid in New Delhi on August 13, PTI reported. The Delhi Police had arrested them from Haryana on Monday.
The two men, Darvesh Shahpur and Naveen Dalal, had claimed to have attacked the Jawaharlal Nehru University student outside the Constitution Club before an event. In a video circulated on messaging service WhatsApp after the incident, the men had claimed: “By attacking Khalid we wanted to give a gift to the people on the occasion of Independence Day.”
They also said in the video that they would surrender on August 17 at the house of Sikh revolutionary Kartar Singh Sarabha. A police team went there but they did not turn up. They were later arrested, and investigators are trying to verify their claims.
Unidentified men outside the Constitution Club in New Delhi had attacked Khalid on August 13. A gun was reportedly found at the scene of the attack, and witnesses claimed two shots were fired. Khalid escaped unhurt. The police said two attackers reportedly escaped the site. Investigators are trying to verify if Khalid was the target of the attack. The case was transferred to the Delhi Police Special Cell on August 14.
