10.46 pm: The number of positive cases in India goes up to 536, according to ICMR.

10.34 pm: Climate activist Greta Thunberg says she has been in isolation for two weeks and about 10 days ago began feeling some symptoms of Covid-19. In an Instagram post, she says she and her father were both unwell after travelling from Brussels, though his symptoms were worse than hers. Thunberg urges people to stay home because the symptoms are so similar to a cold or flu.

The last two weeks I’ve stayed inside. When I returned from my trip around Central Europe I isolated myself (in a borrowed apartment away from my mother and sister) since the number of cases of COVID-19 (in Germany for instance) were similar to Italy in the beginning. Around ten days ago I started feeling some symptoms, exactly the same time as my father - who traveled with me from Brussels. I was feeling tired, had shivers, a sore throat and coughed. My dad experienced the same symptoms, but much more intense and with a fever. In Sweden you can not test yourself for COVID-19 unless you’re in need of emergent medical treatment. Everyone feeling ill are told to stay at home and isolate themselves. I have therefore not been tested for COVID-19, but it’s extremely likely that I’ve had it, given the combined symptoms and circumstances. Now I’ve basically recovered, but - AND THIS IS THE BOTTOM LINE: I almost didn’t feel ill. My last cold was much worse than this! Had it not been for someone else having the virus simultainously I might not even have suspected anything. Then I would just have thought I was feeling unusually tired with a bit of a cough. And this it what makes it so much more dangerous. Many (especially young people) might not notice any symptoms at all, or very mild symptoms. Then they don’t know they have the virus and can pass it on to people in risk groups. We who don’t belong to a risk group have an enormous responsibility, our actions can be the difference between life and death for many others. 10.30 pm: Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala criticises the government for not announcing measures to assist healthcare workers and daily workers during the shutdown.

“The country will heed all requests for a lockdown,” he tweets. “But what did you do to stop the epidemic? How will health workers be protected? What did you do about the crisis of jobs and subsistence? How will the poor spend the 21 days?”

10.26 pm: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal says the 21-day lockdown is very important. “I assure everyone in Delhi that supply of essential items will not be disrupted for the next three weeks,” he says.

10.15 pm: Unidentified officials tell PTI that the National Population Register exercise has been deferred. Work for the NPR, the first phase of the next census, was set to start from April 1 and continue till September 30.

10.08 pm: Three new cases of coronavirus are confirmed in Chennai, ANI quotes Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabhaskar as saying. One of them has returned from the United Kingdom and another from New Zealand.

7.09 pm: The Mumbai Police have arrested three people who allegedly fled quarantine facilities, PTI reports. The trio had returned from Dubai. After they arrived at Mumbai airport from Dubai last week, they were screened and taken to quarantine facilities in Sakinaka, Andheri and Goregaon. However, they fled quarantine and went to their friend’s house in Wadala.

7.07 pm: India asks its students stranded in Bangladesh to stay in their hostels and not to panic, PTI reports. India has closed its border with Bangladesh amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

They can show their identity cards to the police. He said vehicles transporting essential goods and services also do not need passes.

6.52 pm: Egypt has announced a two-week nationwide curfew starting on Wednesday to counter the spread of coronavirus, Reuters reports. The curfew will begin at 7 pm on Wednesday.

6.46 pm: BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain applauds the clearing of the Shaheen Bagh site, where anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protestors had been demonstrating since December 15, PTI reports. Hussain says that in these “grave times”, humankind needs to stand together and fight the coronavirus pandemic.

6.44 pm: A 20-year-old man who returned from Australia around five days ago has been booked in Hyderabad for violating home quarantine norms prescribed by the government, PTI reports. He has been taken to the Gandhi Hospital for Covid-19 tests.

6.39 pm: The Indian Railways has asked people not to cancel the tickets they have booked online for those trains that have been cancelled, News18 reports. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation says that the passengers will automatically be refunded.

6.34 pm: The Calcutta High Court and the district judiciary in West Bengal will not function from March 25 to April 9, Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan has announced, according to PTI.

6.27 pm: States have been asked to set up dedicated hospitals to treat coronavirus patients, ANI reports. Several states have already begun work on this.

6.25 pm: Doctors at Sanjay Nursing Home say they have housing and food problems amid the lockdown, ANI reports. “Doctors who are living on rent here are being asked to vacate their houses as their landlords believe that they will spread the virus,” Senior Resident Dr Amandeep Singh says.

6.23 pm: “Police are prohibiting our mess workers from bringing food from outside,” Dr Adarsh, a doctor working at Sanjay Nursing Home in New Delhi says according to ANI. “We request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to solve problems faced by the health professionals.”

6.21 pm: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s wife Anupama Venugopal donates Rs 2 crore to Telangana government to help the poor with supply of essential commodities during Covid-19, ANI reports. Her father KR Venugopal hands over the cheque to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

5.51 pm: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announces that the state will increase the number of night shelters and give Rs 5,000 to construction workers since their livelihood has been affected, ANI reports.

Kejriwal takes note of a landlord who evicted a woman for being a nurse, and says people should change such mindsets. There have been reports of airline staffers also being harassed for doing their work. “These people are risking their lives for us,” says Kejriwal.

4.47 pm: IndiGo says it is waiving all ticket cancellation fees for people scheduled to travel in the next week and they can reschedule their travel up to September 30. Airline chief Ronojoy Dutta says in compliance with government rules, they are suspending flights from midnight tonight to 11.59 pm on March 31.

4.45 pm: The government bans the export of ventilators and sanitisers.

4.27 pm: The toll in Spain due to coronavirus rises by 514 to 2,696, reports AFP.

4.24 pm: Jammu and Kashmir leader Omar Abdullah jokingly says if anyone needs advice on surviving a lockdown, he has “months of experience at my disposal”. “Perhaps a blog is in order,” he adds.

Abdullah was released earlier today after being under house arrest on August 5, when the Centre revoked Section 370 that had granted Jammu and Kashmir autonomy.

4.13 pm: West Bengal’s lockdown has been extended from March 27 to March 31.

4.10 pm: There is another case of the virus in Noida, where there have been nine who have tested positive for Covid-19 so far, reports PTI. The infected woman reportedly has no history of travelling abroad.

Her family has been quarantined, while the society in which she lives has been sealed off.

“The society has been temporarily sealed from 2 pm of March 24 till 10 am of March 26. Entry into or exit from the society will not be allowed during the period,” PTI quoted District Magistrate BN Singh as saying.

4.09 pm: Myanmar has its first case of coronavirus, reports News18.

4.05 pm: The US risks becoming the next epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic, warns a WHO official. The spokesperson says the US has had a “very large acceleration” in the number of cases.

This comes as President Trump promised to reopen North America, earlier in the day. “Our country was not built to be shut down,” he said earlier. “We are going to be opening up our country for business because our country was meant to be open. We are going to get it all going again very soon.”

3.56 pm: Pakistan has more than 900 coronavirus cases now, reports PTI. The toll due to the virus is now seven.

Passenger trains have been suspended, and on Monday the government called in armed forces to help in administration during the pandemic.

3.51 pm: The Centre directs all states to deploy enough fiscal resources to help establish additional medical facilities to manage the virus outbreak.

3.46 pm: The number of cases in Maharashtra rises to 106, ANI reports.

2.50 pm: Company directors who cannot comply with the rule that they must reside in India for 182 days a year will be allowed. This will not be treated as a violation.

2.47 pm: No late fees needed for MCA 21 registry, and there will be a moratorium till September 30. The requirement to hold board meetings is also relaxed for 60 days.

1.55 pm: On Monday, United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson finally announced a lockdown to contain the spread of the virus. Fatalities in the country have climbed sharply, to 335. In an address to the nation, he said, “From this evening I must give the British people a very simple instruction you must stay at home.”

People will only be allowed to leave their homes for essential goods as infrequently as possible, one form of exercise once a day, to attend to a vulnerable person, to go to work, or to attend to a medical emergency, he said. Johnson said ideally, nobody should go buy essential goods and that they can be delivered to homes.

“No prime minister wants to enact measures like this... But, at present there are just no easy options. The way ahead is hard, and it is still true that many lives will sadly be lost,” he said.

1.39 pm: Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy urges people to stay at home, adding that the virus is spreading to family members of people who have returned home from abroad, reports PTI.

“So far, foreign returnees were infected with the virus. Now, it is spreading to their family members,” Reddy says. “So, we need to take precautions. People should not take the disease lightly and violate the curbs imposed to ensure social distancing.” This is a bigger war than the World War, he says.

“Developed nations with lesser population, good health facilities and best of the resources and technology have not been able to stop the spread of the disease. India being the second largest populated nation in the world with people still living in slums cannot afford to neglect. Therefore, we need to take more precaution,” he adds.

1.30 pm: Police have booked a 35-year-old who fled to Uttar Pradesh from Mumbai after returning from Sharjah, reports PTI. The woman arrived in Nagpur on March 15 and was told to remain under lockdown, a police official told PTI. A case was filed under Sections 188 (disobeying an order issued by a public servant), 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and other provisions of the IPC and the Epidemic Diseases Act.

1.08 pm: A military field hospital for coronavirus has been set up near a public hospital in Mulhouse in eastern France, reports AFP.

12.54 pm: The Chinese government is likely to ease travel restrictions to and from Hubei province, reports The Financial Times. The Hubei Health Commission has said this will initially apply to all areas except Wuhan city, where the virus is said to have originated last year. The travel ban for Wuhan will stay till April 8.

12.53 pm: In its latest update, the Indian Council of Medical Research has said 482 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the country so far.

12.49 pm: Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan says the National Centre for Disease Control has been monitoring all potential coronavirus patients. “Today, more than 1,87,000 people in the country are being monitored by the way of community surveillance,” he adds, according to ANI.

12.48 pm: Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava tells ANI: “Action will be taken against all those who are found violating the prohibitory order under Section 144 Code of Criminal Procedure that is in place in Delhi. However, the response to the order has been good till now.”

12.32 pm: A 65-year-old man, with travel history to the United Arab Emirates, has died in Mumbai’s Kasturba Gandhi Hospital. He was suffering from fever, lung ailment, and respiratory problems, says a release by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. However, the state says he died of renal failure and not Covid-19.

12.28 pm: In Kolkata, doctors and staff of AMRI Hospital at Eastern Railways, who looked after the 57-year-old coronavirus patient who died on Monday, have been home quarantined, reports ANI.

8.05 am: Heavy security deployed in Jafrabad area amid the lockdown in the national Capital, ANI reports.

8 am: “People at the protest site in Shaheen Bagh were requested today to clear the site as lockdown has been imposed,” the police said, according to ANI. “But after they refused, action was taken against violators as the assembly was unlawful. Protest site has been cleared. Some protestors have been detained.”

7.55 am: Shaheen Bagh in Delhi, which has been the site of protests against the amendments to Citizenship Act for months, has been cleared amid the lockdown over Covid-19 pandemic, ANI reports.

7.50 am: The Delhi Police on Monday moved to seal all border pickets, PTI reports. Curfew passes will be issued to people in the essential services. “Strict checking shall be done at the border pickets and internal pickets within the city in every police station area to ensure that no gathering or movement takes place in contravention of the prohibitory orders,” an order by the government says.

Patrolling is expected on Tuesday to ensure compliance with the prohibitory orders.

7.25 am: The Indian Council for Medical Research released a statement on Monday recommending the use of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a preventive medicine for those who face a high risk of coronavirus infection, provided they do not have any symptoms of the disease. The ICMR director Balram Bhargava emphasised that the recommendation applies only to these two categories of people and only for pre-exposure prophylaxis – or prevention before exposure. But this advice is likely to be ignored. The drug is already out of stock in many online pharmacies as panicked Indians have started hoarding hydroxychloroquine and another anti-malarial medicine chloroquine in the hope that the drugs are effective against Covid-19.

7.10 am: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres calls for an “immediate global ceasefire” in all corners of the world. “Our world faces a common enemy: Covid-19,” he says. “The virus does not care about nationality or ethnicity, faction or faith. It attacks all, relentlessly.”

Guterres says: “The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war. That is why today, I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives.”

7.05 am: Italy has the highest number of deaths – 6,077. This is followed by China (3,274), Spain (2,311) and Iran (1,812). The pandemic, which originated in China, has been controlled in the country, with very few cases reported in Hubei over the last few days.

7 am: As many as 3,78,679 people have so far been infected with Covid-19 globally, and 16,508 people have died, according to an estimate by Johns Hopkins University. As many as 1,00,985 people have recovered, it adds.

Here are the main updates from Monday

  • India reported two more deaths, one in Himachal Pradesh and another in West Bengal, taking the toll from the Covid-19 outbreak to nine.
  • As many as 471 people have been infected with the coronavirus so far, according to ICMR. The Health Ministry, however, has confirmed only 468 of these cases, of which 424 are active.
  • All domestic flights would be suspended from Wednesday, the Centre said. International flights to India have already been banned. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation told airlines to ensure that passengers sit on alternate seats till Wednesday, to enforce social distancing.
  • By Monday evening, as many as 21 states and Union Territories had imposed lockdowns and curfews. Maharashtra, Punjab and Chandigarh, which had issued orders for lockdowns, imposed curfews.
  • Kerala reported 28 more infections on Monday, of which 25 were people who had returned from Dubai. This took Kerala’s count to 94, of whom three have been discharged. Maharashtra also reported a surge in cases, taking its count to 97. Maharashtra and Kerala are the two worst-affected states in India.
  • In Mumbai, local trains stopped plying on Monday.
  • The Bengaluru Police marked 5,000 people for home quarantine, and added that violators of the rule will be prosecuted.
  • The Union Home Ministry asked states to take action against people who make racial attacks on people from Northeastern states, following a spate of such incidents.
  • The Indian Council of Medical Research authorised physicians to use the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a potentially preventive measure for asymptomatic people closely working with patients infected with Covid-19.
  • The Parliament session ended two weeks ahead of schedule on Monday. The Lok Sabha passed amendments to the Finance Act, moved by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, before it was adjourned.
