Hathras gangrape: BJP MLA demands action against UP officials amid row over woman’s final rites
Earlier in the day, Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi were detained on their way to visit the woman’s family. They were later released.
Nand Kishor Gurjar, a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Uttar Pradesh, on Thursday asked Governor Anandiben Patel to take action against officials who hurriedly cremated the 19-year-old woman from Hathras.
The Allahabad High Court took suo motu cognisance of the gangrape case and sent a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government.
Two weeks ago, the Dalit woman was tortured and raped by four upper caste men. The woman died on Tuesday at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. She had suffered multiple fractures and other serious injuries when the four accused raped her in her village on September 14. The four men have been arrested. However, the woman was hastily cremated, which led to outrage in political circles.
Earlier in the day, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were released after being detained by the Uttar Pradesh Police, while they were on their way to meet the family of the 20-year-old Dalit woman. The two leaders were escorted back to Delhi.
10 pm: BJP leader Nand Kishor Gurjar has asked Governor Anandiben Patel to act against officials in Uttar Pradesh, reports Hindustan Times. Gurjar has claimed that they had denied the family of the Hathras gangrape victim the right to perform her final rites.
8.31 pm: The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court takes suo motu cognisance of the Hathras incident and issues notice to the Uttar Pradesh government, PTI reports.
8.24 pm: Congress workers in Maharashtra have held a torch rally in Pune in protest against the alleged rape and murder, ANI reports.
8.11 pm: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has criticised the police and BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for manhandling, detaining and preventing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from travelling to Hathras, PTI reports.
“Rahul Gandhi has all the democratic right and constitutional freedom to go to Hathras. Preventing him from going to meet the victim’s family was against all democratic principles,” Vijayan says in a statement issued in Thiruvananthapuram. “This cannot be allowed by a democratic community and was highly condemnable.”
7.29 pm: Congress workers were protesting at India Gate in Delhi against the alleged rape and murder, ANI reports. They have been detained by the police. Delhi Youth Congress workers held a protest near Shastri Bhawan, and were also detained.
7.21 pm: Hathras District Magistrate PK Laxkar says that the media is not being allowed to access the site of the incident because the investigation of a crime scene requires privacy, ANI reports. He says the Special Investigation Team was at the site the whole day today.
7.08 pm: Seema Kushwaha, lawyer of the woman in the 2012 Delhi gangrape case, says that the family of the Hathras complainant has called her to the town as they want her to be their legal counsel, ANI reports. However, she says the administration has disallowed her from meeting them, citing the law and order situation.
6.38 pm: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam President MK Stalin says Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath must apologise for the treatment meted out to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by the police, PTI reports.
6.26 pm: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray says he won’t allow incidents like the Hathras rape to take place in his state and that people committing crimes against women will be severely punished, News18 reports. “When incidents like the one happened in UP occur, we usually discuss it for a while and then forget,” he says. “But in Maharashtra, such incidents will not be allowed to happen.”
6.19 pm: Hathras District Magistrate Praveen Kumar says the city’s Boolgarhi village may be declared a containment zone if certain policemen showing coronavirus symptoms test positive, Hindustan Times reports. “We have asked these cops to get themselves tested and if they test positive, the village might be declared a containment zone,” he says. “Thus, entry of outsiders, including media, has been stopped on apprehension of Covid-19.”
6.04 pm: Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have been released from detention are being escorted back to Delhi by the UP police, PTI reports.
6.01 pm: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor criticises the media for its coverage of the Gandhis’ march. “Godi media terms opposition presence as politicisation: how low will they bend to serve their masters’ agenda?” he asks. “The role of Opposition is to stand up for the victims of a government which lets lawlessness run rife, denies any form of justice to the family and tries to cremate the truth.”
5.52 pm: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram criticised the UP police over its treatment of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. “UP police is a law into itself,” he says. “None of the laws of the country seem to apply to it. What is wrong if the leaders of a political party protest against a gruesome crime and wish to visit the victim’s family?”
Chidambaram adds: “The two leaders were not violent, they did not carry arms, they were lodging a peaceful protest. Why should the police stop them from protesting peacefully?”
5.44 pm: Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar criticises the UP police for its “reckless” behaviour towards Rahul Gandhi. “It is reprehensible for those who are supposed to uphold the law to trample upon the democratic values in such a manner,” he adds.
5.38 pm: The Uttar Pradesh Congress calls for a statewide protest against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi’s arrest, PTI reports.
5.35 pm: Bahujan Samaj Party President Mayawati says President’s rule must be imposed in UP amid the deteriorating law and order situation, PTI reports. “In the wake of the law and order situation in the state and a flood of crimes against women, the Union government should replace Yogi Adityanath with some capable person and if this is not possible, the president’s rule should be imposed in the state,” she says.
Mayawati adds: “I want to say to Yogi Adityanath that you are born from the womb of a woman. You should consider sisters and daughters of others as your own. If you are unable to protect them, you should resign.”
4.31 pm: The Congress tweets a video of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi being arrested by the UP police.
4.26 pm: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attacks the UP government over the woman’s death and hurried cremation. “Have no words to condemn the barbaric and shameful incident at Hathras involving a young Dalit girl,” she tweets. “My deepest condolences to the family. More shameful is the forceful cremation without the family’s presence or consent, exposing those who use slogans and lofty promises for votes.”

4.20 pm: A Bahujan Samaj Party delegation meets Sub Divisional Magistrate Varun Chaudhary in Rishikesh and hands him over a memorandum addressed President Ram Nath Kovind, demanding the hanging of the Hathras rape accused, PTI reports.
4.16 pm: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar criticises Rahul Gandhi’s arrest. “Under what law has he been detained?” he asks. “Why are he and Priyanka Gandhi not being allowed to meet victim’s family? Why is the PM not speaking about ‘Beti Bachao’ now?”
4.10 pm: Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar says the woman’s postmortem report showed that she died of neck injuries, ANI reports. He also denies that the woman was raped, citing a forensic science laboratory report.

3.30 pm: Rahul Gandhi has been arrested, ANI reports. “I want to walk to Hathras alone,” Gandhi tells the police. “Please tell me under which section are you arresting me.” In response, a police officer says: “We are arresting you under Section 188 IPC [Indian Penal Code] for violation of an order. “
3.03 pm: Rahul Gandhi claims that he was pushed and baton charged by the police, following which he fell down, ANI reports. “Can only BJP and RSS people roam around in this country?” he asks. “Can an ordinary citizen not do so? Can only [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi do it.”
2.33 pm: Samajwadi Party workers stage a demonstration in Hathras demanding justice for the murdered woman.
2.22 pm: The woman was strangled and suffered cervical spine injury, her autopsy report has said according to NDTV. The final diagnosis does not mention rape. The woman died of “injury to the cervical spine by indirect blunt trauma,” the report says.
2.11 pm: Priyanka Gandhi along with Congress workers walks along the Yamuna Expressway, after her vehicle was stopped by the Uttar Pradesh Police, ANI reports.
2 pm: A convoy carrying Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi has been stopped by the Uttar Pradesh Police near Greater Noida, NDTV reports. The Congress leaders were on their way towards Hathras, over 140 km from Greater Noida. The two Congress leaders were on their way to the town to meet the family of the woman who was gangraped and killed.
1.54 pm: Congress workers are protesting at the Delhi Noida Delhi flyways against the gangrape and murder, the Hindustan Times reports. Party workers have blocked five lanes of the Delhi-Noida side of the flyway.
1.47 pm: “We demand President’s rule in Uttar Pradesh,” says Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Badruddin Quraishi. “We also demand safety and security of victim’s kin, as in the past in UP, there were instances where rape victim’s kin have been murdered. The government should also give decent compensation to the family.”
1.40 pm: Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati demands President’s Rule in Uttar Pradesh, ANI reports. “Adityanath should resign if he can’t ensure safety to women,” says Mayawati. “I urge the central government to send him to his place – Gorakhnath Math. If he doesn’t like the temple, he should be given the task of Ram Temple construction.
1.33 pm: The police have sealed the borders of Hathras and imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code there, which prohibits a gathering of four or more persons.
