Here is a viewing guide to the new films and shows that will be out in in the second week of October in cinemas and on streaming platforms. All release dates are subject to change.

Among the movies that are arriving on streaming platforms after their theatrical run are War 2 (October 9, Hindi, Netflix), Mirai (October 10, Telugu, JioHotstar) and Sthal (October 10, Marathi, ZEE5).

Tron: Ares

October 10, English, in cinemas

The third film in the Tron franchise follows from Tron: Legacy 15 years ago. Ares refers to a personified artificial intelligence programme (played by Jared Leto) that is created by the Dillinger company head Jullian (Evan Peters) to take on rival Encom. Accompanied by Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith), Ares eventually rebels against Dillinger’s authority.

The Smashing Machine

October 10, English, in cinemas

Dwyane Johnson stars in Benny Safdie’s biographical film about American mixed martial arts champion Mark Kerr. The film chronicles Kerr’s descent into drug addiction and his comeback. Emily Blunt plays Kerr’s loyal girlfriend, while professional wrestler Ryan Bader plays Kerr’s peer in the ring.

Feminichi Fathima

October 10, Malayalam, in cinemas

Fasil Muhammed’s award-winning Malayalam movie is finally getting a release. Feminichi Fathima (Feminist Fathima) explores a woman’s rebellion against her insensitive husband, which begins with a stinky mattress. Fathima yearns to be more than a housewife and mother to three children, much to her preacher husband’s horror.

Actor-producer Dulquer Salmaan, fresh from the success of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, is presenting the film.

Lord Curzon Ki Haveli

October 10, Hindi, in cinemas

Actor Anshuman Jha turns director with a film set in the United Kingdom. A wooden trunk with unknown contents intrigues characters played by Arjun Mathur, Rasika Dugal, Paresh Pahuja, Zoha Rahman and Tanmay Dhanania.

October 10, Hindi, on JioHotstar

Konkona Sensharma stars in the Indian adaptation of the Danish series The Killing. Directed by Rohan Sippy and written by Shreya Karunakaran and Radhika Anand, the show comprises six episodes.

Sensharma’s police officer Sanyukta leads an investigation into the rape and murder of a teenager. The suspects include Naina’s friends, her teacher and a charismatic politician. The cast includes Surya Sharma, Shiv Panditt, Irawati Mayadev, Sagar Deshmukh, Naved Aslam and Mukul Chadda.

Veduvan

October 10, Tamil, on ZEE5

A police officer assigned to capture a deadly criminal runs into unforeseen obstacles. Pavan’s show, also written by him, stars Kanna Ravi, Sanjeev Venkat, Sravnitha Srikanth, Ramya Ramakrishna and Rekha Nair.

The Woman in Cabin 10

October 10, English, on Netflix

Simon Stone directs the screen adaptation of Ruth Ware’s 2016 novel. Keira Knightley plays a journalist who is convinced that her luxury cruise ship is missing a passenger – even though every one on board is accounted for. The cast includes Guy Pearce, Hannah Waddingham, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Art Malik.

Kurukshetra

October 10, Hindi, on Netflix

After Mahavtar: Narsimha comes the animated series Kurukshetra, this time about the Mahabharata. The story of the epic battle between cousins is told through the perspectives of 18 characters.

The series is created by Anu Sikka, written and directed by Ujaan Ganguly and animated by Hitech Animation. Gulzar has written the lyrics for the songs.

The Last Frontier

October 10, English, Apple TV+

Jason Clarke leads an action drama set in Alaska. Created by Jon Bokenkamp (The Blacklist) and Richard D’Ovidio (The Call), The Last Frontier examines the impact of a plane crash in a remote part of Alaska that is patrolled by Frank Remnick (Clarke). Frank must deal with the plane’s surviving passengers – violent convicts.

The cast includes Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Simone Kessell, Dallas Goldtooth, Tait Blum, Sam Hargrave and Alfre Woodard. Two of the 10 episodes will be premiered on October 10, with new episodes every Friday until December 5.
