Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is ranked as one of the least favourite Star Wars prequels, but the widely reviled 1999 movie did give us double lightsaber wielding villain Darth Maul. The villain had very little screen time before he was sliced into half by Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he managed to grab the attention of Star Wars fanatics, who obsess over every character large and small.
Out of the many fan-made Star Wars movies out there is German resident Shaun Bu’s homage to the apprentice of Darth Sidious. Bu and his dedicated team spent two years scripting, directing and producing the 18-minute short. Darth Maul: Apprentice takes place before the events of Episode 1.
The effort put into producing the short film is commendable. Here’s how a similar fight scene from a 2014 film, Darth Maul vs Jedi, was made. The next official Star Wars movie, Rogue One, is scheduled for a December 2016 release.
