The sequel of the spy thriller Ek Tha Tiger has been announced, but with a new director.
Yash Raj Films hit machine Ali Abbas Zafar will direct Tiger Zinda Hai, which will reunite Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Both plays rival spies from India and Pakistan respectively in the original 2012 production. In the new movie, which will be released on December 25, 2017, their characters will join forces to defeat a common enemy.
Zafar gave YRF one of their biggest hits earlier in the year with Sultan. No sequel to that film has been announced – yet.
The Hindi film industry’s experiments with sequels have been mixed. The Salman Khan starrer Dabangg 3 was an inevitability after the success of the first two films. The follow-up to Baaghi (2016) was set into motion almost as soon as the Tiger Shroff martial arts film left the theatres after a satisfying run. There will be a third ABCD movie to cash in on the success of the previous two dance dramas. Ajay Devgn will produce the follow-up to the 2012 comedy Son of Sardaar. Ram Gopal Varma is working on Sarkar 3.
The run of sex comedies seem to have come to an end with the failure of Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 and Great Grand Masti films in 2016. The September 16 release Raaz Reboot is the fourth in the series of erotic horror films, and it will be the last.
But Housefull is going strong – its third edition, which came out in June 2016, totalled up enough zeroes to make the announcement of a fourth chapter inevitable. There will also be a fourth Golmaal, Rohit Shetty’s series of madcap comedies.
