The terrifying two-legged villains from Alfred Hitchcock’s world are set to return. BBC will be adapting the filmmaker’s The Birds (1963) into a television show, and Naomi Watts is rumoured to step into Tippi Hedren’s shoes, reported The Independent.
The show will be bankrolled by the Harry Potter series producer David Heyman’s Heyday Television and is being written by Irish playwright Conor McPherson (The Eclipse and The Actors).
Based on Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 novel of the same name, The Birds follows the life of a socialite (Tippi Hedren) who travels to California’s Bodega Bay during a sudden attack by a flock of birds. In Hitchcock’s words, the film is about “the birds and their age-long relationship with man”. The television adaptation is said to be based more on the novel rather than the film.
