True Detective fans are in for a treat as the cult show’s director of the first season, Cary Fukunaga, is back with another serial killer mystery, The Alienist. This is Fukunaga’s return to television after directing season one of the acclaimed HBO crime anthology.
Based on Caleb Carr’s bestseller, The Alienist follows psychiatrist Laszlo Kriezler (Daniel Bruhl) and a journalist John Moore (Luke Evans) as they hunt down a killer of young boys in America in the 19th century. Dakota Fanning stars in a supporting role. The new trailer was released on November 20.
The atmosphere is shadowy, the period setting immaculate, and the dread dialled up to 11. Fukunaga has created and co-written the show along with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Hossein Amini. They also serve as executive producers along with Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth. The directing team includes James Hawes (Black Mirror) and David Petraca (Game of Thrones, The Man in the High Castle). The series is set to be premiered on TNT Network on January 22.
