Acclaimed Tamil director Bala’s upcoming crime thriller Naachiyaar will be released on February 9, the makers announced on Wednesday. Naachiyaar stars Jyothika and GV Prakash Kumar, with music by Ilaiyaraaja.

While the plot has been kept under wraps, the teaser trailer released on November 15 showed Jyothika as a tough police officer. The teaser generated controversy for showing the actress swearing in Tamil on screen. A case was reportedly filed against Jyothika and Bala in connection to a scene where actress uses the pejorative phrase “Thevadiya payalunga” (sons of whores).
Naachiyaar has been produced by Bala’s production house, B Studios.
Bala made his debut in 1999 with the sleeper hit Sethu, which was remade in Hindi as Tere Naam (2003). The director won the National Award for his fourth feature, Naan Kadavul (2009), which was based on Jeyamohan’s Tamil novel Yezhaam Ulagam.
