One of the five Game of Thrones prequel projects announced by the Home Box Office network has been shelved, the writer who inspired the multi-media franchise, George RR Martin, wrote in a blog post.
Martin, however, did not indicate which prequel series has been axed from the group.
On June 8, HBO ordered a pilot episode for a prequel written by Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class). The story is set 10,000 years before the events of the Game of Thrones television series.
Martin wrote that this series “puts the PRE in prequel”, and though the cast, locations, director or a title are yet to be decided, Martin voted for “The Long Night”.
The four other Game of Thrones prequel projects include one each by series writer Bryan Cogman, Academy Award-winning screenwriter and director Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential), Carly Wray, who has previously worked on HBO’s Westworld, and Max Borenstein, screenwriter of Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017).
Martin wrote that three of these four prequel series “set in different periods and featuring different characters and storylines, remain in active development”.
Martin, whose A Song of Ice and Fire novels serve as the inspiration for the ongoing HBO series and the planned prequels, is presently working on the long-awaited sixth novel of the series: The Winds of Winter. The final season of Game of Thrones will be aired in 2019.
