In the trailer of Gold, Akshay Kumar is a determined hockey coach who brings together a team of earnest and skilled players to achieve a goal for India. Directed by Reema Kagti (Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Talaash), and produced by Excel Entertainment, Gold is a fictionalised account of the Indian field hockey team’s victory against Britain in the 1948 Summer Olympics, which gave India its first Olympic gold medal after independence.
Set between 1936 and 1948, Gold focuses on Tapan Das, an assistant manager who dreams of winning a medal for independent India and works towards fulfilling his goal. The August 15 release also features Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Kumar Singh, Amit Sadh and Mouni Roy. .
In an interview with Times of India, Akshay Kumar pointed out that August 12 marks the 70th anniversary of India’s first gold medal as an independent country. “The release couldn’t have been planned better,” he said. “It’s a matter of pride that while we celebrate the 70th anniversary of one of our first biggest victories on foreign soil in hockey, we will also host the Hockey World Cup,”
