'We discovered Earth when we went to the moon.' Watch Neil deGrasse Tyson analyse a famous photo
In a new video, the author and cosmologist discusses the photo of 'the earth rising over the lunar landscape'.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is a busy man. When he's not busy creating imagined countries filled with rational people, where he is king, or telling everyone in the world that "they might live in a zoo for aliens", or ruining everyone's favourite movies, he also discusses science and the impact it has had on us.
In the video above, by Cosmology Today, Tyson asserts that the photo published in the 1960s was the first time Earthlings saw the planet "as a whole" and not as disparate nations at constant wars with each other – "as nature intended it to be viewed". Did the phrase "without borders" exist before the photo, he asks, pointing to the fact that Doctors Without Borders was only founded in 1971.
In the video above, Stephen Colbert talks to "one of his favourite people to talk to on this planet" and explains what a "strawberry moon" is.
If these videos leave you with a hankering of beautiful views of the Moon and planet Earth, here are a few videos of both.
