The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus is an astonishing sight at all times. Spread over 37 acres, the terminus see an estimated five lakh passengers daily, as 4,800 buses rush in and out. It is at night though that the terminus gets really entrancing. The sheer volume of buses, and their buzzing lights, creates a hallucinatory effect that embodies the whirl of life in Chennai.

It is the second-largest terminus in Asia after Tel Aviv Central Bus Station, and currently handles about 500 buses at a time with space for more.  It is equipped with 64 closed-circuit cameras for security, and it has a childcare centre to assist lost and wandering children and victims of child abuse.

Made in Madras, a YouTube channel, has captured this bustle in a time-lapse video of the terminus with miniature effect. The video gives a bird’s eye view of lights swishing in to the terminus’s grand building while passengers hurry to board the buses.
