The Kashmir economy has incurred a Rs 6,400-crore loss in the past 49 days since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen leader Burhan Wani sparked protests in the region, according to Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation president Mohammad Yaseen Khan. He said the Valley is suffering losses of about Rs 135 crore daily as business activity has come to a standstill because of the ongoing unrest, reported PTI.

Separatist groups, spearheading the agitation to protest recent civilian killings, have ensured that all shops, business establishments and private offices in the Valley remain shut. Even though they relax the protest calls at night, offer no respite to traders who say they have been threatened to keep their shops closed even during late hours.

Khan's estimate was based on daily local transactions from six months ago."The trader community wants the Kashmir issue to be resolved permanently," he said. Tourism, the backbone of the Kashmir economy, has been the worst hit. The agency report quoted a tourism stakeholder, who said, "People are turning away from Kashmir due to the unrest. Hotels and houseboats are empty and famous tourist spots look desolated."
