Canadian immigration website crashes briefly on US election night
Polls indicated Republican candidate Donald Trump holding the lead.
The Citizenship and Immigration Canada website crashed briefly as counting continued for the United States presidential elections. The website was up and running in a few minutes, but reportedly crashed down because of the large number of visitors as polls indicated Republican candidate Donald Trump holding the lead over his rival Hillary Clinton.
The website had crashed once earlier this year, on Super Tuesday, when several US primaries were held. The word “emigrate” has also trended in search engines in the US on Wednesday, The Telegraph reported.
Ahead of the election, thousands of Americans had joked about moving to Canada in case of a Trump victory. The Republican has drawn severe criticism for his anti-Muslim and anti-immigration policies.
Canada has recently taken in refugees from Syria and other countries, and decided to set 3,00,000 as the permanent baseline for the number of immigrants allowed in as permanent residents.
