Putting an end to slew of rumours, the Chinese smartphone brand Oppo has finally announced the launch of the Oppo R17. The event will take place on August 23rd in Shanghai, whereas the pre-orders will begin from August 18th itself. The announcement about the launch was made in a teaser video via Oppo’s official Weibo account.

Oppo R17 has also been listed on its shopping website. However, there was no mention about the R17 Pro, which was part of the video teaser from Weibo. That apart, the R17, is expected to be launched with an 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage variant and will come in two colours—Neon Purple and Stream Blue.

The device sports a 6.4-inch FHD+ OLED display with Gorilla Glass 6 for protection. The edge-to-edge bezel-less display has a “water drop” shaped notch, also offered on recently launched Oppo F9. This seems to be an upcoming trend among Oppo phones sport a drop notch that houses the front facing camera. At the bottom of the display, a thin chin is present.

Interestingly, this device from the selfie-centric smartphone maker gets an in-display fingerprint sensor as well, which is a first among Oppo phones. Camera-wise, the device sports a 25 MP lens with f/2.0 aperture in the front unit dubbed “Selfie Master” with AI capabilities. At the rear, it has a vertically placed dual camera unit with a flash. With the premium technology on board, R17 can be expected to be priced accordingly.

The Oppo R17 has a battery capacity of 3,500 mAh and VOOC technology—Oppo’s own quick charging technology is offered as standard on this model. It is rumoured to run on a 10 nm Snapdragon 670 chipset, though complete details will be revealed during the Shanghai event on August 23rd.
