Government rolls back rail fares
The government partially rolled back its increase  of rail fares for Mumbai's suburban network. Second-class daily ticket fares will not increase, while second- and first-class  ticket prices will rise by 14.2%, the government said. On June 20, the government had announced an increase of between 100% and 187%, drawing an outcry from the around 75 lakh commuters who use the network.

Budget likely to impose wealth tax on expensive watches, paintings
The government may impose a wealth tax on a range assets including watches that cost more than a certain minimum value, archaeological collections, drawings, paintings, sculptures and other works of art, bank deposits outside India and cash in hand of more than Rs 2 lakh. It is also thinking of imposing an additional tax of 10% on annual earnings from dividends on mutual funds and equities that exceed Rs 1 crore.

Centre plans single-window clearance for projects
The government is thinking of setting up a single-window clearance system for capital-intensive steel, coal and power projects to help speed up approvals and boost a sagging economy. The system will include contentious environmental and forest clearances that have held up numerous projects across the country.

Gujarat chief minister announces one-third quota for women in police jobs
Anandiben Patel, the state's chief minister, announced a 33 per cent reservation for women in the police force.
"It is necessary to empower women for their uplift in the society," she told reporters. "It will be implemented in all cadres." Patel is the state's first woman chief minister.
