Newly-elected legislators from the Bharatiya Janata Party in Maharashtra will meet on Tuesday to choose their legislature party leader and move ahead with the process of government formation, even as talks with the Shiv Sena on a possible alliance continue. Regardless of whether the Sena joins in, a BJP-led government will be sworn in on October 31. Devendra Fadnavis is the party's leading choice for the chief minister's post, after union minister Nitin Gadkari stepped out of the race.

Delhi: Situation remains tense in East Delhi's Trilokpuri, three shops burnt
After four days of sporadic communal clashes, the situation in East Delhi's Trilokpuri area on Monday remained tense. Certain localities witnessed minor incidents of violence after some shops were burnt, despite the deployment of Delhi police and Rapid Action Force personnel. Police and senior members from both communities tried to calm residents on Monday, though tensions continued to persist. Shops have remained closed for the fifth consecutive day, resulting in a shortage of essential commodities. "One litre of milk which usually costs Rs 35 is being sold for Rs 70 for the last few days," a resident said. "Vegetable prices have also gone sky high. Everyone is taking advantage of our situation."

Karnataka: Couple from Nagaland assaulted by locals
A couple from Nagaland were assaulted by four men in Bangalore and branded as "foreigners" and "Non-Resident Indians", only days after a Manipuri student was assaulted for not knowing Kannada. In their complaint to the police, the couple stated that the man was punched and the woman was slapped by the perpetrators. Although the attack took place on Saturday, the issue only came to light on Monday, after the accused were arrested.

Assam: 1,000-hour bandh begins in Karbi Along
1,000-hour strike in Karbi Along called by Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State began on Monday morning. JACAS members have said that the strike will continue till December 7 unless it receives an assurance from the central government that the next date for discussion is announced soon. The last round of talks were held on November 6, 2013. The strike has affected normal life and blocked vehicular movement along National Highway-29 into Nagaland and Manipur. The JACAS is demanding the creation of an autonomous state, to be carved out of two hill districts in Assam.

West Bengal: Clashes between BJP, TMC workers leaves three people dead
Clashes between party workers from the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party with muskets and bombs have left three people dead in a village in Birbhum district on Monday. Two of the deceased were reportedly TMC supporters, while the other belonged to the BJP. Each party has blamed the other for starting the violence.
