Haryana is likely to introduce a bill for the protection and upkeep of cows in the budget session starting from Monday, said Agriculture Minister Om Parkash Dhankar. The proposed Cow Protection and Cow Conservation and Development Bill will enforce a ban on cow slaughter. “For the scientific test and analysis, government is considering to establish laboratories to differentiate beef from meat of that of other animal species," Dhankar said. "Test reports of these laboratories will be valid evidence in the court of law." Maharashtra recently passed an amendment to the Animal Preservation bill imposing a ban on slaughtering bulls and bullocks. The Prime Minister’s office has sought an opinion from the law ministry about whether it can circulate the law as model bill to other states.
Changing governments doesn't change ground reality: Hurriyat leader
Hurriyat leader Masarat Alam on Sunday took a jibe at the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that the change in government barely affects the ground reality. Alam was allowed to walk free after Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed called for the release of political prisoners with no criminal charges. "We have to look at this procedure in a legal way," Alam said "I have been arrested many times and have been granted bail thrice and therefore it is not a big deal if I have been released. I have spent most of the time in jails since my childhood therefore it would not be a big deal if I get arrested again.”
Nagaland: 22 arrested for lynching incident, curfew imposed in Dimapur
At least 22 people have been arrested on Sunday for lynching an alleged rapist in Dimapur, Nagaland on Thursday. The police made the arrests based on mobile video clippings of the incident. Curfew was imposed in the city from 3pm to midnight on Sunday as protests continued against the killing in the state. The dead man's body was taken to his home town, Karimganj, in Assam on Saturday. He had been arrested on February 24 for raping a woman. On March 5, he was dragged out of jail by a mob and pelted with stones. He died of internal injuries.
West Bengal: Mamata Banerjee to meet PM Modi
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to seek a waiver of interest on the state's huge debt. "I shall meet the PM tomorrow to secure our rights," Banerjee said. "I am not going to Delhi seeking alms. The state should get its rights." The West Bengal chief minister has been a critic of Modi and this will be their first meeting. She is also likely to meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on March 10.
Bihar: Chief Minister to fast for a day against Land Acquisition Bill
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will lead a 24-hour fast on March 14 to protest the Land Acquisition Bill and other policies of the central government. Janata Dal (United) state president Bashistha Narayan Singh said that party workers will observe fast at the state and block levels as well to highlight the pitfalls of the land bill to the people.
