The West Bengal Police on Thursday arrested two people in connection with the gang-rape of a 72-year-old nun during a robbery at a convent in the state on March 14. Both the men hail from Bangladesh, claimed officials from the Criminal Investigation Department. The first suspect, Sikander Sheikh, was traced through his mobile phone and was picked up from the Nagpada area in South Mumbai. The second person, Gopal Sarkar was arrested Habra in West Bengal and was charged with providing shelter to the robbers. However, officials not reveal the motive behind the crime.
Delhi: Talks between AAP factions break down
Reconciliation talks between the two factions in the Aam Aadmi Party broke down on Thursday, with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal demanding that Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav quit the party’s National Executive. The talks, held two days before a crucial National Council meeting scheduled for March 28, reached a dead end after Bhushan and Yadav said that there were no grounds for them to step down from the National Executive. They added that the faction supporting Kejriwal had to answer issues raised by them regarding the party's internal democracy. However, a party official said that the two sides were still attempting to sort out their differences. “We will keep trying till the last minute,” said Ilyas Azmi, a member of the party’s Political Affairs Committee.
Bihar: Nitish Kumar meets Prime Minister to seek financial assistance
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Thursday to seek a Rs 50,000-crore grant from the Centre. That is the amount the state claims it will lose when the recommendations of the 14th Finance Commission are implemented. This is the first meet between the two leaders since Kumar, who heads the Janata Dal (United), and the Bharatiya Janata Party snapped ties in 2014 before the Lok Sabha polls.
Maharashtra: Police register first case after beef ban
Police in Maharashtra on Thursday registered the state’s first case under a new law banning beef. Three persons were charged with allegedly slaughtering two calves in Nashik. Police reportedly also found 150-kilograms of beef worth Rs 35,000. The three, Asif Talathi, Hameed and Rashid, face up to five years in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000. However, officials said that the three men were missing. The law, which came into effect on March 4, bans the slaughter of bullocks and only allows the consumption of buffalo meat. Meat traders in the state are protesting the ban, pointing out that they it will leave them unemployed.
Goa: Policemen-drug dealer links being probed, says CM
Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Thursday said that allegations of links between policemen and drug dealers were being investigated by authorities. He added that his government was committed to tackling the state’s drug problem. “We are trying to curb drug menace and we will ensure that innocent is not punished,” he said. In 2012, the state had arrested 12 policemen for their links with an Israeli drug lord.
