Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria on Saturday admitted to having met former Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi in London in 2014, clarifying that the meeting had only been held after Modi had contacted the officer regarding a "serious threat" to his life. Maria said he had advised Modi to return to India and lodge a case as the businessman claimed he was being targeted by the underworld. Maria said that he was attending a conference in London when Modi made contact with him.
Illicit liquor deaths in Mumbai cross 90
Ninety four people have died while another 120 are currently battling for their lives after drinking illicit liquor in Mumbai last week. The excise department suspended four officers on Saturday for alleged connections to the people who ran the liquor den. The Mumbai Police has suspended eight officers from the area for negligence and will conduct an inquiry into whether the men worked in connivance with the bootleggers. Five bootleggers from the slum in Mumbai's Malwani area have been arrested. The police are conducting raids in other areas to search for caches of illicit liquor.
Yoga Day celebrations see 35,000 at Rajpath
Celebrating the first International Yoga Day on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a record gathering of people performing asanas on Delhi's Rajpath. The crowd of up to 35,000 people including officials, students, Union ministers, bureaucrats, soldiers and diplomats was to be monitored by the Guinness World Records as the government aims at a record for "largest yoga demonstration or class at a single venue". The day will also be observed in over 250 cities and 190 countries across the world.
Seventeen dead in Almora bus crash
At least seventeen people were killed while 22 were injured when an Uttarakhand Roadways bus bound to Delhi fell into a valley near Uttarakhand's Almora on Saturday. The bus driver was among the dead. The accident took place about 63 km from Almora towads Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region, Almora Superintendent of Police Karan Singh Nagniyal said. “The exact reason behind the accident is still to be known, but the preliminary enquiry shows that the accident occurred because of rash driving,” Nangiyal added.
Pakistan requests access to 19 fishermen
The Pakistan High Commission requested the Ministry of External Affairs to release nine more fishermen and grant it access to 19 others, after the Indian government released and repatriated 88 fishermen from jails in Gujarat on Friday. The fishermen were released to spend the holy month of Ramadan with their families. Officials say the request was made in order to verify the nationality of the 19 fishermen and ensure that all fishermen have been released. Meanwhile, Pakistan, as a reciprocal gesture repatriated 113 Indian fishermen.
