Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale on Friday reached the final of the compound mixed team event at the Archery World Cup Stage One in Antalya, Turkey.
In recurve men’s individual event, Dhiraj Bommadevara reached the semifinal to keep his brilliant run going into the weekend. After a comeback from 0-4 down in the round of 32, he registered a huge upset in the round of 16 against USA superstar Brady Ellison. In the quarterfinal, he defeated compatriot Tarundeep Rai to be part of the Final Four and have a shot at earning a first World Cup stage medal.
Earlier in the day, the Indian pair of Jyothi and Ojas, seeded No 2 in the event, defeated Luxembourg, France and Malaysia on their way to the gold medal match where they will take on Chinese Taipei. The top seeds Colombia were knocked out in the quarterfinal by Italy who then lost to Chinese Taipei. The Indians will face Chen Yi-Hsuan and Chen Chieh-Lun on Saturday.

Jyothi, who equalled the world record in qualifying with a superb score of 713, has also already reached the semifinal in the compound women individual event.
In the second-round fixture, the Indians defeated Luxembourg 159-157. They then again shot 159 (160 being the perfect score) in the quarterfinal against France before coming up with 157 in the semifinal against Malaysia.
Earlier in the day, the recurve mixed team of Atanu Das and Bhajan Kaur bowed out in the first round after losing 5-3 to Denmark.
Recurve eliminations
The story in the recurve individual round was Dhiraj’s superb run to the final four. Coming close was Rai, who lost out 4-6 in the semifinal against the youngster.
There were upsets galore in the round of 16, with the top four seeds falling by the wayside. While Dhiraj’s win over Ellison was good news for India, fourth seed Atanu Das was knocked out by China’s Qi Xiangshuo.

In the women’s recurve, there was a huge result for Bhajan Kaur who stunned the top seed and Mexican stalwart Alejandra Valencia in the round of 32, prevailing in a shootoff. But she was knocked out by China’s Qiu Muyan in the round of 32. That marked the end of India’s recurve invlovement on the women’s side.
