India won the Under-19 Asia Cup defeating Sri Lanka by 34 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium, in Colombo, on Friday evening.
The Indian colts opted to bat first after winning the toss and scored 273/8 in 50 overs. Himanshu Rana top-scored with 71 runs, with Shubman Gill being the second-highest run getter with 70.
Openers Prithvi Shaw and Rana put up a 50-run stand for the first wicket, before Shaw lost his wicket to Praveen Jayawickrama for 39. Rana and Gill then posted a commanding 88-run partnership for the second wicket. Though the team struggled to get solid partnerships going after the loss of Rana and Gill’s wickets, they were able to post a good total that could be defended.
Nipun Ransika and Jayawickrama were the pick of the Lankan bowlers, with three wickets each.
In their chase, Sri Lanka lost their opener, Vishva Chaturanga early, before Reven Kelly and Hasitha Boyagoda steadied the ship taking the score past 100 runs. Skipper Abhishek Sharma’s 4/37 and debutant Rahul Chahar’s 3/22 however skittled the Lankan hopes as they were all out in 48.4 overs for 239 runs.
Sharma was selected as the player of the match, while Rana was chosen as the player of the series.
