The Pakistan Cricket Board is yet to get a reply from Misbah-ul Haq on whether he wants to retire from Test cricket and/or remain Test skipper. To make matters more perplexing, Younis Khan has thrown in his name for Test captaincy as well, reported PTI.
“The last time I met him [Misbah] in Dubai earlier this month, he sought time to think over his future plans,” said PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan. “Now, whenever he gets in touch with us and if he wants to continue playing, I will put the matter before my associates in the board.”
Misbah has been uncertain about whether he wants to remain captain. “I have decided that I will tour West Indies for the Test series but whether it will be as captain or player is up to the selectors and board,” he had said recently. “I think I can continue on the West Indies tour. After that, nothing is final as yet in my mind.”
The 39-year-old Younis was vocal about his captaincy ambitions and said he will not retire from cricket even after reaching 10,000 Test runs. He needs just 23 more runs to reach the milestone and is likely to get there during the West Indies tour beginning in March.
“I will definitely consider the offer if it comes along,” Younis said. “I don’t want to retire because I am enjoying my cricket and I still have lot of hunger for making runs. Even after making 10,000 runs, I want to carry on and do well for the team. I don’t think retirement comes into play until a player is fit and in form.”
