Despite registering a comfortable 2-0 win against Kerala, Maharashtra failed to qualify for the semifinals of the Santosh Trophy as they finished third in Group B in Goa on Tuesday.

Maharashtra opened their account through Vaibhav Shirley in the 34th minute when Aaron Dcosta worked his way on the right and sent a precise cross into the box for Shirley to head the ball home.

Shrikant Veeramallu netted his side’s second goal around the hour mark, and yet again, it was DCosta who set up the goal with a cross from the right wing. Maharashtra’s hopes of progressing to the last four were dashed when Mizoram thumped Railways 5-1 to finish second in the group.

Maharashtra had a lion’s share of the ball and Kerala, who fielded a second-string team, struggled to gain a foothold in the contest.

Mizoram will meet West Bengal while Goa will clash with Kerala in the semi-finals on Thursday.
