Mumbai Indians and the Gujarat Lions had the cricketing audiences right on the edge of their seats on Saturday before the visitors made merry in the Super Over, winning their seventh match this IPL season.
Earlier, batting first after winning the toss, the Lions propped up 153 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of nine wickets in their requisite 20 overs. Mumbai started off on their chase well, bolstered by Parthiv Patel’s 70 at the top of the batting order, before quick-fire run-outs stemmed the visitors, leaving them stranded at 153 losing all their wickets in the overs’ quota.
As batsmen and bowlers of both teams flowed and ebbed in their performances on the day, here are some statistics that emerged notable in the wake of the match:
- This was the only seventh time in the IPL’s 10-year history that a super over had been contested in a match. It was also the first time that both Mumbai Indians and the Gujarat Lions were involved in playing a super over.
- James Faulkner has been a part of a team that was involved in matches with tied scores for the third time in the IPL. On the two prior occasions, the Australian was part of the Rajasthan Royals’ team that contested matches that finished in the Super Over in 2014 (against the Kolkata Knight Riders) and in 2015 (against the Kings XI Punjab).
- Andrew Finch was Lasith Malinga’s second wicket of the day. The Australian was also the 33rd batsman who had been out on a duck to the Sri Lankan in the IPL.
- Jasprit Bumrah equalled Mitchell Johnson’s tally of conceding just six runs in the super over. However, while Johnson’s six runs had the batsman scoring three runs off the bat with the rest coming as extras, the Lions’ batsmen could only score two runs off the bat in Bumrah’s super over spell on Saturday.
- Krunal Pandya became the first player in the IPL this year to contribute at least 25 runs with the bat and then pick three wickets in his bowling spell against the Lions. Pandya went on to score 29 off 20 balls that included two fours and a six. He finished his bowling quota with economical figures of 3/14.
