It took him five years, but Roger Federer finally stood tall as the Wimbledon champion for the eighth time in his career on Sunday against Marin Cilic. Less than a month short of his 36th birthday, the Swiss enthralled the Centre Court crowd as he swept past his nervy opponent, who seemed to be finding it hard to deal with the charged atmosphere as much as he struggled with a suddenly flared-up injury to his left foot.
At the end of it all, as Federer first raised his hands and then the trophy for the crowd to behold, emotions poured through. Not only from the man who had won the glittering trophy, but also from his fans to tennis pundits to fellow tennis professional, highlighting the magnitude of his achievement.
