High jumper Tejaswin Shankar improved his own national mark when he cleared a height of 2.29 metres at the Texas Tech Corky/Crofoot Shootout event in Lubbock, United States, on Friday.
The 19-year-old, who set the national record of 2.28 metres at the Federation Cup in March, cleared the bar at 2.29 metres in his very first attempt to win the event at the Texas Tech University campus following a sixth-placed finish at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

Shankar had failed to clear 2.27 metres in the Commonwealth Games and finished sixth.
But on Friday, the 19-year-old who now trains in the US, jumped one centimetre higher than his previous national record of 2.28 metres, in his very first attempt in a shoot-off event as he prepares for the upcoming Asian Games in Jakarta and a few international meets.
