That’s it from us for day 6. Hope you enjoyed our coverage and join us for day 7.

India won 7 medals today.

Gold: 2

Silver: 1

Bronze: 5

The day, undoubtedly belonged to the rowers.

08:05 pm: HOCKEY

Full-time and India win 8-0.

The Japanese are brushed aside and Sreejesh is yet to concede a goal.

Three games, three wins, 51 goals. Two more pool matches to go and one more win will seal India’s place in the semi-finals.

08:00 pm: HOCKEY (India 8-0 Japan)

India lose their referral but that was preceeded by Manpreet Singh. 90 seconds to go, can Japan reverse this scoreline? No, not unless they score 8 goals in the next minute.

07:55 pm: Gymnastics

Dipa Karmakar was injured for the vault final and finished fifth in the beam balance. She didn’t mince any words while describing her own performance, “I had a very bad feeling after the podium (for the vault). I didn’t do my best.” Read the whole piece here.

07:40 pm: HOCKEY (India 7-0 Japan)

Sandeep Singh takes the shot from a tight angle but manages to rifle it home. Vivek Sagar Prasad gets India’s seventh tonight and their 50th at these Games overall.

With this win, India will go top of Pool A leapfrogging South Korea.

07:35 pm: HOCKEY (India 5-0 Japan)

Rupinder Pal Singh has a penalty stroke which he easily converts. Third quarter ongoing. To read more updates about the hockey game, read here.

07:29 pm: ARCHERY

Terrible campaign for Indian recurve archery, as Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari are knocked out in the mixed team quarterfinals, to add to their exit in the individual competition. For Atanu, the problem is ‘psychological’ and unrelated to the federation or the facilities provided to the archers. Read what he had to say here.

07:22 pm: HOCKEY (India 4-0 Japan)

Mandeep Singh receives the ball and duly deflects it home. It’s four, it’s easy for team India. Win number three at the Asiad around the corner. Follow the match in-depth here.

07:15 pm: HOCKEY (India 3-0 Japan)

It’s half-time in Jakarta and the Indian men have a comfortable lead of three goals. SV Sunil, Dilpreet Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh scored for Harendra Singh’s men against the hapless Japanese. Can the men in blue register a third consecutive victory? Follow our dedicated hockey live blog to find out more.

07:10 pm: SHOOTING

Comicstaan proved an important distraction as Heena Sidhu grabbed a bronze this morning. For the 28-year-old shooter, the bronze was bittersweet. Read Zenia D’Cunha’s piece here.

07:00 pm: HOCKEY (India 3-0 Japan)

Rupinder Pal Singh gets the third for team India. Harendra Singh’s men are cruising, no contest at all. Can Japan muster a comeback. Follow our hockey live blog here.

Follow the live blog of India versus Japan here.

06:30 pm: HOCKEY

India are about to start their third group stage match against Japan. Follow Praveen Sudevan’s live blog for the same.

Remember India have two wins out of two.

06:14 pm: BADMINTON

Abhijeet Kulkarni with his take on an off-day for the men’s singles players:

Both Prannoy and Srikanth were clearly out of their rhythm in the second round encounter. While Srikanth was guilty of making too many mistakes, Prannoy could not match the intensity of his opponent in the decider and went down rather tamely.

06:10 pm: BADMINTON

HS Prannoy is out!

Terrible day for Indian men’s badminton. First Srikanth and now Prannoy are knocked out of the men’s singles competition. Prannoy loses 12-21, 21-15, 15-21.

06:03 pm: SQUASH

Joshna Chinappa confirms that India will win at least 3 medals in Squash.

She defeats Hong Kong’s Chan Ho Ling 3-1 and will also be in the women’s singles semi-finals. Sourav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal are also in the semis of individual competition.

06:00 pm: BADMINTON

HS Prannoy must win this to keep the Indian challenge alive in the men’s singles. Also, huge upset elsewhere in the draw, as Shi Yuqi has been knocked out by Jonatan Christie.

05:53 pm: TENNIS

A gold and two bronze medals by the Indian tennis contingent. Not a bad effort considering there was a confusion before the start of the games with Leander Paes pulling out at the last minute. Ramkumar Ramanathan’s no-medal show is a tad disappointing though.

05:50 pm: BADMINTON

HS Prannoy is locked in a battle with Thailand’s Wangcharoen Kantaphon and the match is all tied at 1-game apiece. The Thai shuttler leads 5-3 in the third game.

05:44 pm: TENNIS

It’s all over for Prajnesh. He’ll have to settle for a bronze. He nets the ball to concede the match to Denis Istomin 2-6, 2-6. He played a few good points but they weren’t enough today.

India’s tennis challenge in Jakarta and Palembang comes to an end with one gold and two bronze medals.

05:37 pm: TENNIS

There it is. The break that Istomin was looking for. Prajnesh gifts it with a long forehand. He smiles wryly and blasts a ball out of the court in frustration. Istomin screams with joy. Istomin up 4-2 in the second set.

05:35 pm: BOXING

Manoj Kumar advances via unanimous decision. He manages to ward off the challenge from Wangdi Sangay of Bhutan in Men’s Welter weight round of 32.

05:35 pm: TENNIS

Just the one point that Istomin gives away, off an unforced error, as he goes up 3-2 in the second set. Both players are looking for that decisive break.

05:30 pm: A day when the Indian favourites fell!

Women’s Kabbadi team: Lost to Iran in the final

Compound Mixed team: Verma and Vennam lost to Iran

Kidambi Srikanth: Lost to Vincent Wong Wong in the round of 32

Gaurav Solanki: Lost in the first round

05:20 pm: TENNIS

Tight hold for Istomin there. Prajnesh had an opportunity to break at 30-40 but Istomin serves an ace to make it deuce. With two more good serves, he goes up 2-1 in the second set.

05:15 pm: TENNIS

Prajnesh has his task cut out for him but he holds his serve for his first point in the second set. The Indian trails 2-6, 1-1.

05:05 pm: TENNIS

Prajnesh Gunneswaran loses the first set of his semi-final against Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin 6-2. Prajnesh is India’s last remaining hope in the singles after Ramkumar Ramanathan was knocked out earlier.

05:00 pm: BADMINTON

Some reason to rejoice for Indian badminton lovers after Kidambi Srikanth’s shock loss. Ashwini Ponappa and Sikki Reddy become the first Indian women’s doubles pair since 1986 to reach the quarters. They defeat Malaysia’s Chow MK and Lee MY 21-17, 16-21, 21-19.

Interesting piece of trivia from Abhijeet Kulkarni:

The last women’s pairing to reach the women’s doubles quarter-finals at the Asian Games were Hufrish Nariman and Mallika Barua in ‘86. That’s right, it’s taken 32 years to reach the last 8 at the Asiad once again!

04:55 pm: SWIMMING

Sandeep Sejwal finished seventh in the men’s 50 metre breaststroke final. He clocks a 27.98 seconds timing, while Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki wins with a time of 27.07 seconds.

04:45 pm: BOXING

Oh dear! Gaurav Solanki is out of the men’s 52kg flyweight category!

That’s a disappointing start for Indian boxers. Looked like Solanki got off to the better start but the Japanese pugilist grew into the bout and ended up winning by an unanimous decision.

04:40 pm: A round of updates from events involving India...

Women’s Golf: The Indian women have had a shocker at the golf course on day 2. Diksha Dagar has dropped 6 shots to be at 5-over, tied with Ridhima Dilawari. Sifat Sagoo is at +3, tied-20th

Equestrian: The Eventing event began today and in Dressage, India’s Fouaad Mirza was top, Jitender Singh was fourth best. Cross country action next.

Tennis: Prajnesh is in action in the semifinal against Istomin, the top seed. (Remember Istomin from the Djokovic match? That was something eh?)

04:32 pm: BOXING

Indian pugilists kick off their campaign soon, amid plenty of expectations. After their mighty impressive showing in the CWG, let’s see how they fare at the Asiad. Gaurav Solanki will take on Japan’s Tanaka Ryomei in the men’s 52 kg category round of 32 bout. The second Indian to fight it out will be veteran Manoj Kumar in the 69 kg category. He faces Bhutan’s Wangdi Sangay.

Solanki is in action right now...

04:26 pm: WRESTLING

India’s wrestling campaign came to an end with three medals. What did you make of it? Abhijeet Kulkarni says all is not well.

04:24 pm: It’s been a gloomy Friday in the second half if you are an Indian fan but it all started off so well when the rowers roared back after a disappointing Thursday.

“Yesterday (Thursday), we had a bad day but soldiers never give up. I told my teammates that we will go for the gold and we will give it all. It was about karo ya maro (do or die). And we did it,” said Sawarn Singh, senior most member of the gold-winning quadruple sculls team.

04:17 pm: BADMINTON

Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy won the first game against Malaysia’s Chow/Lee 21-17, but the Malaysians have come back to take the second game 16-21. Decider going on...

04:10 pm: Just to keep you posted on what else is pending for the day

  • Joshna Chinappa (squash) will be in quarterfinal action.
  • Boxing has begun and there are two Indians starting their campaigns: Gaurav Solanki and Manoj Kumar
  • India v Japan men’s hockey group stage
  • Badminton action continues

03:54 pm: From the highs of 2017 and reaching world No 1 during the course of CWG – it’s been a slump.

03:51 pm: SQUASH

Saurav Ghosal is through to the semi-final. The men’s singles top seed is on track to improve his silver from four years back, as he defeats India No 2 Harinder Pal Sandhu 3-1 in the quarter-final.

Can Joshna Chinappa reach the semi-final as well

03:45 pm: GYMNASTICS

Dipa Karmakar ends fifth in the balance beam final, with a score of 12.500. The gold goes to Chen Yile of China with a 14.600. No medal in artistic gymnastics for India. Not entirely a surprise, though.

03:38 pm: BADMINTON

Oh dear, oh dear. After what was a fantastic start to the day, India have hit a rut at the Asian Games across events. India’s day gets worse as Kidambi Srikanth is knocked out in the second round (first match) by world No 28 Wong Wong Ki Vincent. Srikanth loses 21-23, 19-21. He has hit a massive bad patch.

The Field’s Abhijeet Kulkarni weighs in: “Srikanth has clearly hit a bad patch. Nothing he is doing is working. He has been struggling to find a decent rhythm for few months now and that is showing in the results. He had game points in the 1st game against Vincent but couldn’t convert.”

03:36 pm: GYMNASTICS

Solid attempt by Dipa in an event which isn’t her best. A backflip ending gives her 12.500 meaning she lies 3rd. Two more gymnasts to go but a medal is a unlikely here.

03:20 pm: SQUASH - MEDAL ASSURED

Dipika Pallikal Karthik registers a facile 3-0 win over Misaki Kobayashi of Japan and reaches the semis. In squash, all semi-finalists receive a bronze, and Dipika has assured herself of a medal. Can Joshna Chinappa join her there? It’s sure Harinder or Saurav would be there as well.

03:18 pm: Badminton update

Uh oh! Srikanth had two game points but squanders them to lose the first game 21-23 to Vincent. After trailing 5-8, Srikanth has took a 12-15 lead but Vincent fought back to win the opener.

Srikanth’s poor recent form looks set to continue. Is this another upset in the offing?

03:15 pm: GYMNASTICS

It’s Dipa Karmakar time! It’s time for the women’s beam balance final, not Dipa Karmakar’s favourite event, but let’s see how she goes. First things first, it’s good to have her back and know the injury is not too serious.

03:11 pm: SQUASH

All Indian quarter-final in the men’s squash singles. It’s Sourav Ghosal versus Harinder Pal Sandhu. Remember, a medal has been assured for India as one of these two would be in the semi-final. Harinder took the first game but Ghosal has fought back to make it 1-1.

03:07 pm: BADMINTON

Alright then, after a wait, India’s badminton action starts on Friday. It’s time for the men’s singles second round, with Srikanth Kidambi taking on Hong Kong’s Wong Wong Ki Vincent. This is a tough first-round game, mind you. After trailing 5-8, Srikanth has opened up a 12-15 lead.

03:00 pm: Compound Archery - mixed team quarter-final

BIG UPSET! Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam are out of the mixed team event. Iran (THEM AGAIN!) have beaten India 155-153. The duo had won a World Cup medal at all four stages this year and were strong favourites to medal here. But alas, archery’s disappointing results continue. The slip-up in the third set cost India the match, they were in the lead upto that point.

02:49 pm: Compound Archery - mixed team quarter-final

Oh dear. After leading for most of the tie, Iran have taken a 2-point lead after the end of 12 shots. 4 more remain for India to fight back.

02:45 pm: Compound Archery - mixed team quarter-final

Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Vennam are in action against Iran.

02:38 pm: Kabaddi

Two days, two defeats to Iran. Indian men 18-27 Iranian men Indian women 24-27 Iranian women What’s next for India? Where do the teams go from here? What will the repercussions of these defeats be?

Jaideep tries finding out what went wrong for the men’s team, filled with superstars. HINT: There’s more than one problem. Read more here.

A quick recap of India’s important results on day six:

  • Three medals in rowing: GOLD in Men’s Quadruple Sculls, BRONZE in Men’s Lightweight Doubles Sculls, Men’s Lightweight Single Sculls
  • Men’s double tennis: GOLD for Rohan Bopanna, Divij Sharan
  • Women’s 10m air pistol: Bronze for Heena Sidhu; Manu Bhaker finishes 5th.
  • Kabaddi: Indian women lose in the final against Iran, no gold for India at kabaddi at 2018 Asiad.
  • Recurve archery: Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das knocked out of the mixed recurve event
  • Compound archery: Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Vennam qualify for quarter-final
  • Swimming: Sandeep Sejwal reaches the men’s 50m breaststroke final

02:23 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - India win SILVER

The reaction of the Indian women says it all. They’re stunned here. A good first period but a disastrous second one. They fought hard, almost pulled off a comeback but not to be. And the men’s captain Ajay Thakur can’t quite believe it. He’s in tears as are the women’s team. It’s agonising for every Indian kabaddi player out there, bested by Iran not once, but twice.

02:20 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - India win SILVER

Remember, India have added another medal from Kabaddi. But a bronze and a silver

02:15 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

That’s it. INDIA LOSE, IRAN WIN! Iran have done the double over team India. 27-24 win here. Iran are your 2018 Asian Games women’s kabaddi champions.

02:12 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

Has Sakshi Kumari done it again with seconds to go??! No, she can’t. Iran pull her back. Was there a jersey pull? DOESN’T MATTER, THERE ARE NO REVIEWS. INDIA HAVE LOST!

02:10 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

WOW, what a raid!!!! Sakshi Kumari! Gets two defenders out and a bonus point. India are back in this.

02:09 pm:

Timeout. India trail 21-25 with two mins left. Ajay Thakur in tears!

02:05 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

Iran are starting to play the clock... taking their time with empty raids. India not going into any rash tackles either. And now Iran have a 4-point lead after a strong tackle on Payel! India down to 4 in defence. This is Iran’s match to lose?

The defence steps up and wins a point. India back to 5 players, 21-24 down but time running out.

02:02 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

Another timeout called by India, Iran continue to lead by 3 points. The raiders have not been able to pull off a big play to bring the team back.

01:59 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

Captain Payel with a good raid but the Iran defenders do well not to concede more than one point. Iran have managed a couple of bonus points on their raids. India’s raider tackled next time around but the Iran defender had touched the mid-line to make it 1 point each. Lucky for India there. Iran lead by 2 points, at 19-21. 8 mins into the second half.

01:58 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

Quite a few controversies in the raids – much like yesterday. Timeout called by India with the score 16-18 in favour of Iran.

01:55 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

WOW. Well, well, well. Iran have effected an all-out! Combination of good defence and a controversial raid has seen the game go from 8-13 to 17-13! IRAN ARE IN THE LEAD!

01:53 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

Second half begins... Iran are showing they are brilliant in defence too, Shonali is tackled to the ground. India are dangerously close to being all out.

01:50 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

HALF-TIME SCORE: India 13-11 Iran

If you thought the women would have it easy unlike the men last night, that’s certainly not proven to be the case. While it looked like they might pull away at the end of the half, Iran come roaring back. A wonderful raid, combined with a missed ankle-hold by India, meant Iran close the gap to two points. That Iran raid looked like it was worth more than the two points that it was awarded.

01:44 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

This is a much more tactical battle. With India down to four defenders, the focus was on to revive the raiders by letting Iran go for it in the do-or-die third raid. Randeep Kaur, back in the field, dragged two defenders before crossing the line. India lead 13-8.

01:38 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

Another timeout. Almost 9 minutes into the first half. India almost get a all-out - Mandeep was inches away from dragging the Iran defence past the line, but the Iran defence keep her in their half. Iran not letting India get away with this. Payel is then tackled next time around after the play resumes.

It’s 9-7 to India, in the first half

01:36 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

It’s 7-3 in the first half.

India have started well. Defensively, only one instance of worry. Jafari, the No 10 of Iran and the captain, won a two-point raid but apart from that India are in control. Payel and Shonali are doing the raids for India, they lead 6-2 before Iran take a timeout. Back on court, and the score is 7-3.

The men’s team, meanwhile, are here to cheer for the women’s team. That’s good to see.

01:30 pm: GOLF - Men’s (individual and team)

The Indian men are doing well at the Pondok Indah Golf and Country Club. Aadil Bedi is tied-3rd at 5-under, Rayhan Thomas John a stroke behind tied for 5th with Naveed Kaul -3 and tied 8th. Hari Mohan Singh is at +6. We’ll keep you posted on the final standings in a while,

01:26 pm: Women’s Kabaddi - GOLD MEDAL MATCH

We’ve already had one Indian team knocked out by Iran. The men went crashing out, losing 18-27 to the Iranian men. Can the women defeat their Iranian counterparts? Remember, the Indian women, similar to the men, have a 100% record at the Asian Games. The Indian women are out there and raring to go. Here we go...

01:15 pm: Fencing

Indian women’s epee team go down to China in the quarterfinals. Only Jyotika Dutta won a match out of the nine. China were the favourites. But Jyotika Dutta, it must be said, has impressed in this campaign as she had also progressed to the quarterfinals of the individual event.

01:08 pm: Weightlifting

Rakhi Halder endures a disappointing outing in the women’s 63kg event - missing all three of attempts to lift 93kg in the snatch section. Her hopes of progressing at event are over.

12:35 pm: Shooting

Solid performances in big events this year, and now Heena can focus on Tokyo 2020. Feels like she’s been around forever, but remember she’s only 28.

CWG 2018: 2 medals (1 gold in 25m Air Pistol, 1 silver in 10m Air Pistol)

Asian Games 2018: 1 bronze in 10m Air Pistol.

12:28 pm: Shooting

This is Heena’s third consecutive medal at the Asian Games. The earlier two were team events - 2010, 2014 - but this is her first individual medal. A champion shooter, who knows how to step up on the big stage! This has been a good year for her, with two medals at CWG (gold in 25m, bronze in 10m) to go with a bronze at Asian Games.

12:19 pm: Tennis

Moments to savour for Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan! First gold medal for both of them at the Asiads. In fact, the first ever Asian Games medal for Bopanna.

12:15 pm: Plenty to celebrate for India but looks like it’s a reality check for Manu Bhaker in Indonesia. Olympian Anjali Bhagwat observed on air that Manu Bhaker looked off colour today. And it showed in her shooting. Not the best of events for her. She failed to medal in the 2018 Asian Games.

12:09 pm: Great little phase for the Asian Games!

11:56 am: SHOOTING - 10m air pistol women’s final

BRONZE MEDAL FOR INDIA!

Heena Sidhu’s first individual medal at the Asian Games. She was at 7th at one point in the final, staring at an early elimination. She shot a series of 10s in the latter stages. With her final shot, with a silver assured had she hit 10.2, she shot 9.6. A great fightback, and a creditable bronze for the Indian.

11:50 am: SHOOTING - 10m air pistol women’s final

Meanwhile in the shooting range, Manu Bhaker has been eliminated. Her forgettable Asian Games campaign comes to an end. Heena Sidhu has recovered well to be in contention.

Bopanna and Sharan will be serving for the match and the gold medal!

11:37 am: SHOOTING - 10m air pistol women’s final

Inconsistent shooting from the Indian women so far. Manu, especially, seems to be struggling – just as she did in the last 3 rounds of qualification.

Manu’s first series:– 8.8, 9.8, 10.2, 9.6, 10.6
Heena’s first series: – 9.6, 9.6, 10.0, 10.5, 10.2

11:35 am: TENNIS - Men’s doubles GOLD medal match

Time for shooting finals! Two Indians in action. Here we go... good luck, Heena and Manu!

11:20 am: TENNIS - Men’s doubles GOLD medal match

India one set closer to the Gold! Bopanna and Sharan take the first 6-3 in 25 minutes. Solid serving by the Indians in the first set. Some numbers from the game so far.

11:15 am: Swimming

09:56 am: Archery
