Here are highlights from the first T20I between Australia and India.
Series Preview: Mission T20 World Cup restarts for Virat Kohli and Co
Batting first, India finished with 161/7 (20).
In reply, Australia finished with 150/7 (20).
5.40 pm: India captain Virat Kohli – “There were no plans of having Yuzi in the game. Concussion replacements are a strange thing. Today, it worked for us. Yuzi showed character to squeeze the opponents. Natarajan was superb. He looks like a guy who can really develop his skills and be useful for us in the format. Nice to see guys stepping up at the right time. Chahar bowled well as well. Chahal got us back in the game. Hardik’s catch was a game-changer as well.”
5.37 pm: Australia captain Aaron Finch – “He (match referee David Boon) just let us know that Jadeja had been ruled out with a head injury. It is what it is. Can’t argue with a medical expert.”
5.33 pm – And the player of the match is.... Yuzvendra Chahal! The leg-spinner came on as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja and finished with figures of 3/25 from his four overs.
INDIA WIN BY 11 RUNS!

After 18.1 overs, AUS are 127/7 – Starc is gone!

WICKET! Yuzvendra Chahal, on as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja, has bowled a brilliant spell. He finishes with figures of 3/25 as Matthew Wade departs. This time Virat Kohli holds on to the catch. Australia need 40 off 18 with 5 wickets remaining.
After 16 overs, AUS are 116/4 (Henriques 25, Wade 3)
Superb over from Sundar, just three from it. He finishes with excellent figures of 0/16 from his four overs. Australia need 46 off 24. They need a big over.
After 15 overs, AUS are 113/4 – Short is gone!
WICKET! An important breakthrough for India as T Natarajan removes D’Arcy Short. The left-hander hits it straight to long-on and Hardik Pandya takes a simple catch this time. Short walks back for 34 off 38 as Matthew Wade comes out to bat.
After 14 overs, AUS are 104/3 (Short 32, Henriques 18)
Henriques pick up another four. After getting three wickets, the all-rounder is impressing with the bat too. Nine runs come from that Chahal over.
After 13 overs, AUS are 95/3 (Short 31, Henriques 11)
Shot! Shami drops it short and Henriques pulls it powerfully for six. That was flat! Ten runs from the over. Australia need 67 off 42.
After 12 overs, AUS are 85/3 (Short 29, Henriques 4)
Washington Sundar returns to the attack and bowls a tidy over. Australia need 77 off 48. Another wicket here and they’ll be in real trouble. India have mounted a fantastic fightback.
After 10.3 overs, AUS are 75/3 – Maxwell is gone!
WICKET! India are on fire at the moment! Another big wicket as Glenn Maxwell departs for 2. Natarajan raps him on the pads and Kohli reviews successfully. Game on! Brilliant variations by the debutant Natarajan. Moises Henriques is the new batsman.
After 9.5 overs, AUS are 72/2 – Smith is gone!
WICKET! After two dropped chances, India have pulled off two terrific catches. Steve Smith is dismissed as Sanju Samson puts in a special effort in the deep. And it’s that man Yuzvendra Chahal who strikes again. Smith departs for 12 off 9 as Glenn Maxwell comes to the crease.
After 9 overs, AUS are 68/1 (Short 22, Smith 9)
Shot! Chahar drops it short and Smith pulls it comfortably for six. India need a couple of more wickets quickly to get back in the contest.
After 7.4 overs, AUS are 56/1 – Finch is gone!
WICKET! Well, well. Concussion substitute Yuzvendra Chahal has struck in his first over. That will NOT please the Aussie camp. Finch departs for 35 (26) as Hardik Pandya takes a brilliant catch running in from long-off. Steve Smith is the new batsman.
After 7 overs, AUS are 54/0 (Short 18, Finch 34)
Two catches dropped in one over! It’s all going Australia’s way at the moment. First Manish Pandey fails to hold on to a sharp chance, before Virat Kohli makes a meal of a regulation catch. Deepak Chahar can’t believe his luck.
After 6 overs, AUS are 53/0 (Short 18, Finch 33)
It’s all going Australia’s way at the moment. Natarajan bowls a decent delivery but Finch gets an inside-edge for four. Eight runs came from that over. The end of a powerplay which was dominated by Australia.
After 5 overs, AUS are 45/0 (Short 16, Finch 27)
Sensational shot from Finch! Shami angles it in and the Australian captain flicks it over square-leg for six. He also got a four earlier in the over. The runs keep flowing for Australia!
After 4 overs, AUS are 33/0 (Short 15, Finch 16)
Another four for Australia, this time off Finch’s bat. Kohli persisting with Sundar. This is a strong start for the hosts. India need a wicket or two.
Update on the Ravindra Jadeja injury: Yuzvendra Chahal is on as a concussion substitute and can bowl four overs. Jadeja seemed to have pulled his hamstring but he also got struck on his helmet during his innings. Which is why Chahal is on and can bowl. The Australian camp is not happy with the turn of events, which is understandable.
After 3 overs, AUS are 26/0 (Short 14, Finch 10)
There’s no stopping Short at the moment! Mohammed Shami joins the attack and is thumped for two fours on the off side.
After 2 overs, AUS are 16/0 (Finch 10, Short 5)
Sundar from the other end and he does a good job. Just 2 runs from the over. Finch came down the wicket to try and throw the bowler off but the off-spinner was good enough.
UPDATE: Jadeja has not taken the field after being hit on the helmet while batting. Chahal fielding in his stead.
After 1 over, AUS are 14/0 (Finch 8, Short 5)
Chahar trying to find swing but the Aussie openers were up to the task and took him for a few boundaries. Two fours for Finch in the first over and one for Short.
3.42 pm: Sundar to open the attack for India when Australia come out to bat?
3.40 pm: CSA and ECB have confirmed the postponement of the first ODI between SA and Eng. This decision results from a player from the Proteas team testing positive for COVID-19 after the teams’ last round of scheduled testing performed on Thursday ahead of the ODI series.
3.39 pm: Here’s the story of Australia’s special jersey today.
3.37 pm: Australia have a finishing problem though. They just haven’t been able to close out innings well. We saw that in the ODIs and now in this T20 match too. A lot of it may have something to do with Starc’s poor form.
3.32 pm: India may have posted a competitive total but Ravindra Jadeja limping off the field at the end of the innings, with what seems like a hamstring injury, is a big cause for concern.
INDIA FINISH WITH 161/7
A sensational knock from Ravindra Jadeja to take India to a respectable total. The left-hander remains not-out on 44 off 23 with five fours and a six.
After 19.3 overs, IND are 152/6 – Sundar is gone!
WICKET! Washington Sundar chips it to long-on and Mitchell Starc gets the wicket. But the good news for India is that Ravindra Jadeja is back on strike.
After 19 overs, IND are 150/6 (Jadeja 34, Sundar 6)
HUGE over for India! Simply sensational from Jadeja! He’s in considerable pain at the moment but is playing a crucial hand for India. Three fours and a massive six from that Hazlewood over. India needed this desperately. Starc to bowl the final over. Sundar is on strike.
A small delay in proceedings as Ravindra Jadeja seems to have injured his thigh after completing a quick two. He’s getting treatment now.
After 18 overs, IND are 127/6 (Jadeja 12, Sundar 6)
Welcome boundary for India as Sundar gets an inside edge for four. With 12 balls remaining, India will be hoping to get past 150. Hazlewood and Starc likely to bowl the last two overs.
After 16.5 overs, IND are 114/6 – Pandya is gone!
WICKET! Huge blow to India as Hardik Pandya departs. The right-hander hit a six earlier in the over but then mistimed one to get caught out. Pandya departs for 16 off 15 as Moises Henriques gets his third wicket. He finishes with superb figures of 3/22. Washington Sundar is the new batsman.
After 16 overs, IND are 104/5 (Pandya 7, Jadeja 6)
Josh Hazlewood comes on to bowl his third over and concedes just seven runs. Another boundary-less over for India. Hardly any urgency shown by Hardik Pandya so far. India need him to cut loose soon.
After 15 overs, IND are 97/5 (Pandya 3, Jadeja 3)
The end of a brilliant spell by Adam Zampa. The leg-spinner got the wicket of Manish Pandey and returns with figures of 1/20 from four overs. The Indian innings is in disarray at the moment.
After 13.5 overs, IND are 92/5 – Rahul is gone!
WICKET! And another one bites the dust. This time it’s KL Rahul who finds the fielder. The Indian innings is falling apart. Rahul walks back for 51 off 40 as Moises Henriques gets his second. It’s Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease again in Canberra.
After 12.4 overs, IND are 90/4 – Pandey is gone!
WICKET! Manish Pandey is gone for 2 off 8. Adam Zampa gets the top-edge with some extra bounce and the cut goes to Josh Hazlewood at short-third. India are in a spot of bother. The in-form Hardik Pandya is the new batsman.
After 11.1 overs, IND are 86/3 – Samson is gone!
WICKET! Sanju Samson has squandered a strong start and hit one straight to cover. Moises Henriques gets the wicket. Samson walks back for 25 off 15 after playing some brilliant strokes. Manish Pandey is the new batsman.
After 11 overs, IND are 86/2 (Rahul 50, Samson 23)
FIFTY for KL Rahul! The right-handed opener has played some delightful strokes so far. He gets to his half-century off 37 deliveries. Rahul and Sanju Samson are looking solid at the moment. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson jumps and cuts one powerfully over cover for four (off Abbott). Stunning shot.
After 10 overs, IND are 75/2 (Rahul48 , Samson 15)
Moises Henriques joins the attack and does a decent job in his first over, no boundary conceded. India are at the halfway stage of their innings. They’d want to add at least close to 100 more runs to their total.
After 9 overs, IND are 68/2 (Rahul 45, Samson 11)
Big over for India! Swepson may have got the wicket of Kohli but he has been poor for the most part so far. The leg-spinner drops it short repeatedly and pays the price for it. First Samson pulls it for a huge six, before Rahul pierces the gap in the deep by pulling one for four.
After 8 overs, IND are 56/2 (Rahul 40, Samson 4)
Top over from Zampa, just five singles from it. Big opportunity for Samson. India will be in a strong position if he gets going.
After 6.4 overs, IND are 48/2 – Kohli is gone!
WICKET! Mitchell Swepson strikes in his first over and Virat Kohli is out to a leg-spinner once again. That was such a soft dismissal. Kohli tried to work it on the leg side but ended up giving a simple return catch. The India captain walks back for 9 off 9 as Sanju Samson comes to the crease.
After 6 overs, IND are 42/1 (Rahul 31, Kohli 8)
Big over for India! Sean Abbott joins the attack and proves to be expensive first up. KL Rahul gets a streaky top-edge for four before absolutely crushing a pull for six. What a shot that was. End of the powerplay. Which team will be happier at this point?
After 5 overs, IND are 30/1 (Rahul 20, Kohli 7)
Interesting move from Finch. The Aussie skipper removes Starc, who bowled wonderfully in his last over and got rid of Dhawan, and brings on Zampa. Perhaps to attack Kohli. But the leg-spinner gets to bowl just one ball to the India captain.
After 4 overs, IND are 21/1 (Rahul 11, Kohli 7)
Shot! Kohli steps outside leg and whips it past mid-wicket for four. Those wrists! India need to get a move on. This is a top start for Australia.
After 2.4 overs, IND are 11/1 – Dhawan is gone!
WICKET! Mitchell Starc has knocked Shikhar Dhawan’s off stump back. Nothing shot from the left-hander. Starc is bowling wonderfully and getting late swing, which isn’t a good sign for India. Virat Kohli is in.
After 2 overs, IND are 6/0 (Rahul 4, Dhawan 1)
Good start from Josh Hazlewood too. Keeps a good length and doesn’t offer much width to Shikhar Dhawan. India are yet to hit a boundary.
After 1 over, IND are 4/0 (Rahul 4, Dhawan 0)
Mitchell Starc starts off with a wide but then does well to keep it just outside off to Rahul. A hint of movement in the air for the left-arm pacer.
1.40 pm: Right, we’re ready for the start for the first T20I between India and Australia. KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan opening the batting for India. Mitchell Starc has the new ball for Australia. Here we go!
1.39 pm: Correction – After some confusion over India’s playing XI, it has been confirmed that Manish Pandey and not Shreyas Iyer will be playing today.
1.24 pm: Big news from India’s XI is that Jasprit Bumrah has been rested. That’s the right call, we’d say.
1.17 pm: Playing XIs
India: Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul (wk), Virat Kohli (c), Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Shami, T Natarajan.
Australia: Aaron Finch (c), D’Arcy Short, Matthew Wade (wk), Steve Smith, Moises Henriques, Glenn Maxwell, Sean Abbott, Mitch Starc, Mitch Swepson, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.
1.11 pm: TOSS – Aaron Finch has won the toss and Australia will BOWL first!
1.08 pm: What a week this is turning into for T Natarajan! After making an impressive ODI debut, the left-arm pacer will play his first T20 International today. Here’s wishing him all the very best!
01.00 pm: Short of resources in ODIs, India will have enough options to choose from to pose a stiffer challenge to Australia when the two sides clash in the three-match T20 series.
The 1-2 ODI series loss reaffirmed that India have a lot of work to do in the 50-over format but they possess a much more balanced squad in the shortest format.
Before the pandemic suspended sporting activities around the world, India had blanked hosts New Zealand in a five-match series and they will be taking a lot of confidence out of that result into the contest against Australia.
The presence of Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar and T Natarajan, who did well on his ODI debut on Wednesday, lends much-needed balance to the bowling department. And KL should move to the top of the order as well.
Sundar will be high on confidence after a solid IPL where Royal Challengers Bangalore and India skipper Virat Kohli used him effectively in the powerplay and middle overs.
