India vs England, 1st ODI as it happened: Prasidh bags four-for on debut as hosts win by 66 runs
Here are highlights from the first ODI of the three-match series between India and England.
Batting first, India finished with 317/5.
In reply, England got all-out for 251 in 42.1 overs.
Player of the match Shikhar Dhawan: “Very happy to contribute to the win. My smart work off the field has paid off. You feel a bit sad (missing out on a hundred) but I’m not someone who gets too sad or happy. It was a good shot and I wasn’t in a rush to get a century. Sometimes it doesn’t work out but there’s always another time.”
Virat Kohli: “This is one of our sweetest victories in the recent past. I am a really proud man at the moment. The team showed great character and intensity. It was a great comeback from all our bowlers. Prasidh, Krunal, Shardul, Bhuvi were all amazing. We promote players who have intent. Special mention to Shikhar and KL. We want to back players who do a selfless job. There’s a healthy competition, with 3-4 players competing for every spot. The last 10-over period between Krunal and KL was outstanding. We could’ve gotten more had Shikhar and I stayed a bit longer. I feel there will be more high-scoring games this series.”
Eoin Morgan: “The pitch was brilliant and it allowed an entertaining game. There’s a lot we did right, our openers were brilliant. We need to learn and execute better. But India fought back well and deserved the win. We pride ourselves on batting aggressively and we want to continue doing that. Sometimes it doesn’t work, but for us it’s better to lose this way than by any other way that isn’t true to our style.”
Prasidh Krishna: “We didn’t start too well but we had the belief in us. We knew that one wicket could change things. The IPL has helped me to deal with pressure situations. As a bowling unit, we were outstanding.”
Prasidh Krishna gets the last wicket. He finishes with figures of 4/54 from 8.1 overs. These are the best figures on ODI debut by an Indian!

After 22.1 overs, England are 169/3 – Jonny Bairstow is gone!
WICKET! Shardul gets the man India wanted! Bairstow walks back for a superb 66-ball 94 after pulling one straight to the fielder in the deep. England still have the edge perhaps but India are very much in this.

WICKET! Prasidh gets his second! Stokes is gone for 1 off 11 after driving one straight to catching cover. India are fighting back and have the momentum now. Eoin Morgan, who split the webbing on his hand while fielding and had to get stitches, is the new batsman.

FIFTY for Bairstow and the 100 comes up for England! This has been a mighty impressive knock from the right-hander. He welcomes Kuldeep Yadav into the attack with pull shots for four and six. Poor start from the left-arm wrist spinner as he delivers half-trackers.

INNINGS BREAK:
INDIA FINISH WITH 317/5

After 47 overs, India are 271/5 (KL Rahul 39, Krunal Pandya 38)
India have been getting around 10 runs each over in this powerplay but they’d be keen to have that one really big over. Mark Wood is back into the attack to bowl two of the last three overs. India will be eyeing 310 at least.
After 45 overs, India are 250/5 (KL Rahul 31, Krunal Pandya 25)

After 40.3 overs, India are 205/5 – Hardik Pandya is gone!
WICKET! Ben Stokes has his third. Hardik plays an inexplicable shot and is caught by Jonny Bairstow at second slip. He walks back for 1 off 9 as his brother Krunal, making his ODI debut today, comes to the crease.
After 40 overs, India are 205/4 (KL Rahul 13, Hardik Pandya )1
Shot! That’s just what Rahul needed. Sam Curran bangs it in and the right-hander plays a spanking pull shot for six. The 200 is up for India as we enter the second powerplay of the innings. India would want to get close to 100 runs at least in the last ten overs.

WICKET! Oh dear, oh dear! Dhawan pulls it hard but the ball goes straight to mid-wicket. It’s that man Stokes once again who gets another wicket from a far-from-good delivery. After 36 overs, India are 193/3 (Shikhar Dhawan 95, KL Rahul 5)
Rahul comes to the crease and gets his first four with an outside edge off Sam Curran past the keeper. The right-hander had a forgettable T20 series and needs runs to regain some confidence.
After 34.5 overs, India are 187/3 – Shreyas Iyer is gone!
WICKET! Mark Wood gets another one as Iyer plays a nothing shot to find the fielder in the deep. The right-hander simply through his bat at it and mistimed the ball completely. India need to be careful if they don’t want to squander the solid platform laid.

Dhawan brings up the 100-run stand between him and Kohli with a gorgeous, on the rise drive through cover and mid-off for four. India are looking solid at the moment. Time for a drinks break.
Virat Kohli has looked mighty impressive so far...
After 29.1 overs, India are 151/1 (Shikhar Dhawan 71, Virat Kohli 50)
FIFTY for Virat Kohli! The India captain gets his 61st ODI half-century at a-run-a-ball. He’s looking hungry for a big one today.
After 29 overs, India are 150/1 (Shikhar Dhawan 71, Virat Kohli 49)
Shot of the day so far from Dhawan! He makes room for himself by stepping away a bit before driving it over cover for six. Top shot that. He then clips one to the fine-leg fence for four. Earlier, Stokes made a mess of a Kohli drive at mid-off and the ball went straight through him for four. Fifteen runs from that Mooen over.
After 28 overs, India are 135/1 (Shikhar Dhawan 61, Virat Kohli 44)
Dropped! Dhawan pulls it in the air and Moeen can’t hold on to it in the deep. Rashid looks distraught. That should’ve been taken, it came at a good height to him.

Another tight over from Tom. The Curran brothers have been economical so far. Dhawan is also looking good at the crease.
After 15.1 overs, India are 64/1 – Rohit Sharma is gone!
WICKET! Ben Stokes strikes and England get the breakthrough! Rohit will be bitterly disappointed with that dismissal. He chased a wide ball and ended up nicking it to Jos Buttler. That would’ve been called a wide. After battling through the pain of that elbow injury and getting his eye in, Rohit has thrown it away. He walks back for 28 off 42 as skipper Virat Kohli comes to the crease.
After 15 overs, India are 64/0 (Rohit Sharma 28, Shikhar Dhawan 34)
Shot! Tom Curran bangs one in and Rohit Sharma steps out a bit to play his trademark pull for four.

After 12 overs, India are 49/0 (Rohit Sharma 22, Shikhar Dhawan 26)
The Indian openers do well to bag seven runs in that Sam Curran over without taking any risk. One big over for India here and suddenly it’ll look like a great start to the innings for the hosts.
After 11 overs, India are 42/0 (Rohit Sharma 20, Shikhar Dhawan 22)

After 10 overs, India are 39/0 (Rohit Sharma 19, Shikhar Dhawan 20)
Five runs from that Sam Curran over and that’s the end of the powerplay. India haven’t got a flying start but they will be glad they haven’t lost a wicket on this green-ish looking pitch.
After 9 overs, India are 34/0 (Rohit Sharma 17, Shikhar Dhawan 17)
Back-to-back fours for Rohit! The first one was hit on the rise and in the air past cover, the next one was a classy punch straight back to a full delivery. Eight runs from that Wood over.
After 8 overs, India are 26/0 (Rohit Sharma 9, Shikhar Dhawan 17)
Dropped! Dhawan cuts one hard and Jason Roy at point can’t hold on. That was a tough chance, though. Rohit then survives a run-out chance as Sam Billings puts in the throw. Rohit had to put in the dive, would’ve been close had it hit. Just two singles from that Sam Curran over.
Rohit is struggling with that elbow blow. He’s in discomfort and the physio is out again to tape the wound up.
After 7 overs, India are 24/0 (Rohit Sharma 8, Shikhar Dhawan 16)

Rohit continuing but it will be a while before the elbow settles. He’s hurting for now. Two maiden overs in a row for England.
After 4.4 overs, India are 10/0 (Rohit Sharma 4, Shikhar Dhawan 6)
Ouch! That has got to hurt Rohit! Wood bowls one at 148 kmph, the ball bounces steeply and hits the right-hander on his right elbow. The physio is out and Rohit looks to be in pain.

After 2 overs, India are 4/0 (Rohit Sharma 3, Shikhar Dhawan 1)
Huge appeal off Sam Curran’s first ball but Nitin Menon says not-out. The ball seemed to pitch slightly outside leg and even hit Rohit high. Decent shape for the left-arm pacer into the right-hander. Three runs from that over.
After 1 over, India are 1/0 (Rohit Sharma 1, Shikhar Dhawan 0)
Just one run from that first over bowled by Mark Wood. No surprise that the right-arm quick is generating solid pace immediately. Not much sideways movement in the first over, though.

But Morgan and coach Chris Silverwood say the tour is still providing valuable lessons about the tough conditions in the country where the T20 World Cup will be staged in October-November.
And more will be learned from the ODIs in Pune, said to the captain.
“Given the World Cup round the corner, playing any international cricket at all is a huge opportunity for guys who have been on the fringes and not made selection so far,” Morgan told reporters.
