IPL 2021, Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals, as it happened: Dhawan, Shaw power DC to big win
Highlights from match No 2 of Indian Premier League 2021.

We’ll leave you tonight with this brilliant image...

11.37 pm: Player of the match Shikhar Dhawan – “Really enjoyed my batting tonight. Even Prithvi did really well. They used that plan (of bowling wide) in the last IPL too, so I knew I had to take smart risks. It’s tremendous to watch Prithvi when he is in the flow. I’m happy that his hard work is paying off.”
11.35 pm: Rishabh Pant – “In the middle phase I was slightly under pressure but our bowlers did well to bring us back. It was special to captain in my first match against MS. He has been my go-to man. We wanted to finish the match with one over to spare. Prithvi and Shikhar were very good, especially in the powerplay. They kept things simple.”

— Rajdeep Sardesai (@sardesairajdeep) April 10, 2021
CSK impressive in recovering from two early blows to score 188 but terribly unimpressive defending it. Simple catches dropped, bowling lacking in discipline too. Hard work lahead. For DC, Shaw-Dhawan were excellent, serving notice to IPL opponents as well as national selectors

Scorecard - https://t.co/jtX8TWxySo #CSKvDC pic.twitter.com/pkFHrX2z0o
11.17 pm: Prithvi Shaw – “Very happy with the performance, the pitch was easier to bat on in the second innings and we made the most of it. Worked on my technique with Pravin (Amre) sir before the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Working hard on myself, don’t want to give any excuses.”
11.14 pm: MS Dhoni – “Our batters did a good job to get us to 188. Our bowling could’ve done slightly better. We bowled quite a few boundary deliveries, the execution wasn’t nice.”
11.10 pm: Rishabh Pant finishes the match with a drive over mid-wicket for four. He wins his first IPL match as captain in style! Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur finishes with forgettable figures of 2/53 from 3.4 overs.
DELHI CAPITALS WIN BY 7 WICKETS!
After 18.3 overs, DC are 186/3: WICKET! Thakur bangs it in and Stoinis pulls it straight to the fielder. The right-hander flicked one for four before that. This wicket will frustrate Delhi in terms of net run-rate, they need 3 off 9.
20 games this IPL at Mumbai and Bengaluru! Renowned high scoring venues in IPL. Tonight’s DC chase was just a teaser. #IPL2021
— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) April 10, 2021
After 18 overs, DC are 182/2: Crunched! Bravo pitches it up and Stoinis drives it powerfully past cover for four. Bravo finished with figures of 1/28. Delhi need 7 off 12.
Shikhar Dhawan is now the third-highest run-getter in IPL, goes past Warner and only behind Kohli and Raina.
— Bharath Seervi (@SeerviBharath) April 10, 2021
Most runs in IPL:
5911 - Kohli
5422 - Raina
5282 - DHAWAN
5254 - Warner
5249 - Rohit #IPL2021 #DCvsCSK
Dhawan’s had a great day in the field, three catches and a sterling knock of 85, which makes him certainty for MOM unless DC have a precipitous collapse
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 10, 2021
After 16.3 overs, DC are 167/2: WICKET! Dhawan hits Thakur for two fours but then gets out LBW to a yorker. The end of a fantastic innings from the left-hander, he walks back for 85 off 54.
Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan become the first pair to share a 138-run partnership in IPL. Now all partnerships from 0-141 runs have taken place at least once in IPL.#IPL2021 #CSKvDC
— Kausthub Gudipati (@kaustats) April 10, 2021
After 16 overs, DC are 158/1: Dhawan walks across and whips a full-toss from Bravo for four to the mid-wicket boundary. Delhi need 31 off 24.
After 15 overs, DC are 151/1: Dhawan and Pant pick a four each in that Chahar over as Delhi cross the 150-run mark. They need 38 off 30.
Great stand of 138 runs between Dhawan & Shaw : The second highest stand against CSK for any wicket in IPL.
— Umang Pabari (@UPStatsman) April 10, 2021
Highest : 144 runs btn Rahane/Watson for RR for opening wicket at Ahmedabad in 2015.#CSKvsDC
After 13.3 overs, DC are 138/1: WICKET! Prithvi Shaw is gone and would you believe it, it’s Moeen Ali who takes the catch. The right-hander was dropped twice earlier off the bowling of Moeen. Dwayne Bravo pitched it wide and Shaw hit it to deep extra over. He walks back for a sparkling 72 off 38.
Can we have a shawstopper please?🙄#WhistlePodu #Yellove #CSKvDC 🦁💛
— Chennai Super Kings (@ChennaiIPL) April 10, 2021
This #PrithviShaw looks calm , composed and smart ! The rashness he had last season has been converted into sharpness ! #CSKvsDC
— Vikram Sathaye (@vikramsathaye) April 10, 2021
Massacre! #DCvCSK
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 10, 2021
After 13 overs, DC are 136/0: SIX & FOUR! Shaw is toying with the bowling. Moeen drops it short, he gets hit. Moeen tosses it up, he gets hit. Delhi need 53 off 42. At the halfway stage of this match, perhaps no one thought of a 10-wicket win for DC as a possibility. It is now.
After 12 overs, DC are 121/0: Dwayne Bravo joins the attack and concedes eight runs in his first over. Delhi need 68 off 48.
After 11 overs, DC are 113/0: Fourteen runs from that Thakur over. The Delhi openers seem to be dealing only in boundaries. This is turning into a thrashing for Chennai.
A partnership of immense class...

The Delhi-Mumbai partnership on fire for Delhi in Mumbai.#IPL2021
— Vinayakk (@vinayakkm) April 10, 2021
It’s Shaw’s prithvi. We are just living in it.
— Tareque Laskar (@tarequelaskar) April 10, 2021
After 10.2 overs, DC are 102/0: FIFTY FOR SHIKHAR DHAWAN! He gets there in 35 balls. The seasoned left-hander has been the perfect foil to Prithvi Shaw. Four fours and two sixes in his knock so far.
After 10 overs, DC are 99/0: DROPPED AGAIN! Moeen could’ve had Shaw twice! Gaikwad had a tough-ish chance at deep mid-wicket but that should’ve definitely been taken.
FIFTY FOR PRITHVI SHAW! He pulls the last ball of the over for four to bring up his half-century in just 27 balls. Seven fours and two sixes so far from the right-hander. He was in unbelievable form during the Vijay Hazare Trophy and is carrying that confidence here. DC are cruising at the moment.
Very impressed so far by Prithvi Shaw. He is such a natural stroke player but, other than one false shot, has chosen his deliveries to hit really well.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) April 10, 2021
“It’s gone into the Sachin Tendulkar stand and if Sachin Tendulkar is watching, he would be nodding in appreciation”: Sunil Gavaskar on the last six from Prithvi Shaw.
After 9 overs, DC are 86/0: SIX! Chennai were starting to build some pressure but Shaw breaks the shackles. It was tossed up by Jadeja and the right-hander stepped out to hit it well over long-on. Top shot.
After 8 overs, DC are 75/0: DROPPED! Moeen joins the attack and Shaw plays a nothing shot that loops towards long-off. Santner runs in from the deep and gets his hands to it but can’t hold on. He may have been distracted by Bravo who was running back. Chennai can ill afford such mistakes.
After 7 overs, DC are 70/0: Ravindra Jadeja joins the attack and concedes just five runs in his first over despite a couple of long hops.
Wow some terrific shots by @PrithviShaw and Shikar is not to far behind! Looks like @DelhiCapitals are on top after the power play! #CSKvDC
— Kris Srikkanth (@KrisSrikkanth) April 10, 2021
65-0 - that's Delhi's equal fifth highest ever unbeaten Powerplay score. A blistering attack from Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan has taken their chances of victory from 42% to 81% according to WinViz. #IPL2021 #CSKvDC
— The CricViz Analyst (@cricvizanalyst) April 10, 2021
After 6 overs, DC are 65/0: That’s the end of the powerplay, it’s been all Delhi in the chase so far. Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw have lit up the Wankhede with their strokeplay. DC need 124 off 84 with 10 wickets in hand.

That last square drive from Prithvi Shaw. Sumptuous!
— Joy Bhattacharjya (@joybhattacharj) April 10, 2021
After 5 overs, DC are 58/0: It’s raining boundaries! Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw bring up their fifty-run partnership in the fifth over as Delhi Capitals dominate in the chase. Hat-trick of fours (four overall) in Shardul Thakur’s first over.
In all the brouhaha about young players like Pant, Gill and Shaw, dont overlook senior pro Dhawan’s grit and determination to retain his place in white ball cricket for India. Scoring big in IPL helps that
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 10, 2021
After 4 overs, DC are 41/0: Dhawan with arguably the shot of the tournament so far! Curran pitched it in the slot and the left-hander simply played an extended drive for six. That was picture-perfect! He got a four before that Prithvi got one off the last ball in what was a big over for Delhi.
The ticker said "four" when Shaw hit that pull shot, before realising Jadeja was at square leg. How cool did he make that fielding effort look!#CSKvDC
— Vinayakk (@vinayakkm) April 10, 2021
After 3 overs, DC are 24/0: SIX! The first six of the run-chase comes from the bat of Prithvi Shaw. Pulled straight off Chahar’s bowling. DC have started well.
After 2 overs, DC 16/0: IT was turning into a good over from Curran but Dhawan plays a gorgeous straight drive for four to make sure it was a decent over for DC.
After 1 over, DC 9/0: A boundary each for Shaw and Dhawan in the first over. Good start for Delhi.
Shaw and Dhawan in the middle, DChahar with the ball in hand. Can CSK get early wickets? Will Shaw continue his brilliant form?
MS Dhoni dismissed for his 4th #IPL duck!
— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) April 10, 2021
The four who got him..
Shane Watson, Dirk Dannes, Harbhajan Singh and now Avesh Khan#CSKvDC #DCvCSK#IPL2021
Innings break: Suresh Raina’s half century and useful knocks from Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, and Ravindra Jadeja take CSK to 188/7. The Chennai stalwart reckons the pitch is not easy to bat either. Dhoni has plenty of bowling options, their game to lose at this point?
Sam Curran’s strokefilled cameo reinforces belief that he is among the top 3-4 young cricketers in the world. CSK will hope he will shine with ball too. Score of 188 defendable, but not invincible against a powerful DC batting line up

“Always a good feeling to score runs for Chennai Super Kings”: Suresh Raina
9.13 pm: Good last over for DC by Chris Woakes. Sam Curran is clean bowled off the last ball and finishes with 34 off 15. This innings was quite the rollercoaster ride but at the end of it, CSK will be happy with the total they got after the start they had. Suresh Raina’s 36-ball 54 was the difference.
CSK FINISH WITH 188/7 (20)

After 19 overs, CSK are 178/6: Two fours and two sixes in that Tom Curran over! After Jadeja pulled the first ball for four, his brother Sam hit him for consecutive sixes and a four. Just the over Chennai needed, 23 runs from it.
Most consecutive innings without a duck in T20s:
— ESPNcricinfo stats (@ESPNcric_stats) April 10, 2021

108 - MS Dhoni (2015-2020)

102 - Shaun Marsh (2012-2019)
101 - JP Duminy (2014-2019)
Dhoni's duck today was his first in T20s since the IPL 2015. #IPL2021 #CSKvDC
After 18 overs, CSK are 155/6: The end of a magnificent spell by Avesh Khan. The 24-year-old right-arm quick from Madhya Pradesh was picked ahead of Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav and has repaid the faith. He got the key wickets of Faf du Plessis and MS Dhoni and finishes with figures of 2/23 from his four overs.

After 17 overs, CSK are 150/6: Interesting battle as brothers Tom and Sam Curran come up against one another. Sam flicks the last ball for four but a good over by Tom nonetheless, just seven runs from it.
It was a special, special knock from Suresh Raina tonight...

Bad luck #Raina. And worse follows for CSK with Dhoni falling for a duck. DC showing fighting spirit
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 10, 2021
Is it just me or has Jadeja ran out a well set batsman one too many times?
— Clive (@_vanillawallah) April 10, 2021
After 15.3 overs, CSK are 137/6: WICKET! MS Dhoni is gone for a two-ball duck! Avesh Khan has two wickets in one over! The CSK skipper attempted a pull and chopped it on. This has been an impressive fightback from Delhi.
After 15.1 overs, CSK are 137/5: WICKET! Oh dear, Raina is run-out! Jadeja turned for the second run, banged straight into Avesh and scampered back into the crease. Raina was left with no chance to turn around and get back. An unfortunate end to a superb innings from the left-hander, he walks back for 54 off 36.
After 15 overs, CSK are 136/4: Consecutive fours for Ravindra Jadeja and he is up and running! Marcus Stoinis concedes 12 runs in his second over.

— Abhinav mukund (@mukundabhinav) April 10, 2021
Correction: Ravindra Jadeja is the new man at the crease, not MS Dhoni.
After 13.5 overs, CSK are 123/4: WICKET! Dhawan takes his third catch as Curran removes Rayudu. The right-hander didn’t read the slower-ball and lifted it to long-off. He walks back for 23 off 16 as Jadeja oins Raina at the crease.
Superb half century. Reckon #Raina has a point or two to prove?

Suresh Raina has gone after the spinners in a huge way today. He's scored 37 runs from 20 balls v spin, compared to 13 from 12 against pace. Classic Raina, who is well and truly back. #IPL2021 #CSKvDC

48-2 after 8 overs. #CSK have come storming back. But they need the runs, this is a difficult ground on which to defend.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) April 10, 2021
CSK have already hit seven sixes in this inngs after PP.
— Deepu Narayanan (@deeputalks) April 10, 2021
Across 14 inngs in IPL 2020, the most they hit in the middle overs phase (7-15) in a match was five.
That's a tick mark to one of their issues from last year. Return of Raina & addition of Moeen has chelped.#CSKvDC
After 13 overs, CSK are 117/3: FIFTY FOR RAINA! The left-hander gets there in just 32 balls and with his fourth six of the innings. What a knock this has been from the veteran! The fifty-run stand between Raina and Rayudu comes up in just 24 balls. Stoinis joins the attack and bowls a high full-toss, Rayudu picks it early and pulls it hard for six. The right-hander then gets four leg-byes past short-third. Expensive over for Delhi. It’s all Chennai at the moment!
After 12 overs, CSK are 98/3: Suresh Raina is on fire! Two more sixes for the southpaw in that Amit Mishra over. He is timing the ball sweetly and CSK fighting back!

After 11 overs, CSK are 81/3: Another six off Ashwin’s bowling, this time Rayudu sweeps it brilliantly. The off-spinner does well to concede just four runs off the next five balls but finished with expensive figures of 1/47 from his four overs.
Moeen Ali has played three reverse sweeps against off spin in T20 cricket - he's been dismissed twice. #IPL2021 #CSKvDC
— The CricViz Analyst (@cricvizanalyst) April 10, 2021
After 10 overs, CSK are 71/3: Another good over by Amit Mishra, just five from it. Prithvi Shaw with a good save at the boundary off the last ball.
After 9 overs, CSK are 66/3: SIX! Raina continues to attack and Ashwin concedes his third six of the over. A powerful, flat pull over mid-wicket. Ambati Rayudu is the new batsman for Chennai. They need a big partnership.
Moeen did his job according to me. This is what CSK will be looking from him on most days.
— Clive (@_vanillawallah) April 10, 2021
After 8.3 overs, CSK are 60/3: TWO SIXES AND OUT! Ashwin has removed Moeen thanks to a superb catch by Dhawan. The left-hander hit two brilliant sixes straight back but went for a hat-trick and perished. Dhawan ran back and completed a tough, tough catch. Moeen walks back for 36 off 24.
After 8 overs, CSK are 48/2: Seasoned leg-spinner Amit Mishra joins the attack and delivers a good over for Delhi, just five runs from it. “Aa jao Ash bhai,” says Rishabh Pant at the end of the over.
Ashwin starts doing these funky things in Wankhede. Always.
— Clive (@_vanillawallah) April 10, 2021
After 7 overs, CSK are 43/2: Ashwin concedes consecutive fours again, this time it’s Moeen who gets the runs. The off-spinner then pauses at the crease before bowling a Kedar Jadhav-esque round-arm ball. It’s all happening!
After 6 overs, CSK are 33/2: Tom Curran joins the attack and delivers a solid over, just three from it. And that’s the end of the powerplay. Delhi are on top as Chennai try to rebuild.
After 5 overs, CSK are 30/2: Ashwin joins the attack and Raina hits him for consecutive fours! The left-hander drills one past cover before stepping out and lifting the next ball over mid-on. No real turn for the off-spinner first up.
After 4 overs, CSK are 20/2: Two fours for Moeen Ali, either side of the wicket. Chris Woakes drops it short and the left-hander takes full toll. The first one was a superb punch and the second a well-placed hook.
After 3 overs, CSK are 11/2: Suresh Raina gets going with a cut for four. But this is a fantastic start for Delhi. Chennai need to be careful here.
