IPL 2021, PBKS vs CSK, as it happened: Moeen Ali’s quick-fire knock powers Chennai to 6-wicket win
Highlights from match No 8 of Indian Premier League 2021 from the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Player of the match: Deepak Chahar (4/13 from his four overs)
Punjab lost it the first four overs when batting. Even in T20, if pitch/conditions are very testing, better to play out the tough spell circumspectly rather than throw away so many wickets from which recovery is impossible.
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 16, 2021
Dominating win by @ChennaiIPL bowlers made it easier for the batsmen of csk. Swing was the king again. #deepakchahar

CSK win by 6 wickets!
In MS Dhoni’s 200th game for Chennai Super Kings, the men in yellow have put in a commanding performance. Deepak Chahar, Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali were the top performers at the Wankhede tonight.
After 15 overs, CSK are 102/4: An eventful over from Shami comes to an end. Chennai need 5 off 30. They have Curran and du Plessis at the crease now.
CSK afflicted by the jitters suddenly. Or madness, seeing how Raina and Rayudu got themselves out
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 16, 2021
After 14.3 overs, CSK are 99/4: WICKET! Mohammed Shami has two in two! Ambati Rayudu with an inexplicable slog first up and the top edge is caught safely. #CSK providing drama with 8 runs needed for a win.
After 14.2 overs, CSK are 99/3: WICKET! Suresh Raina has to go. Riley Meredith troubled him with short balls before Mohammed Shami banged one in to get the edge to the keeper.
After 14 overs, CSK are 97/2: A delay in proceedings as the umpires went up to check two things: first, whether it was a no ball as Meredith bowled a second bouncer. Then, the third umpire also checked if du Plessis had edged it but there was no spike. It was a simple dot ball at the end of it all.
Chinna Thala finish please! 🙏#PBKSvCSK #WhistlePodu #Yellove 🦁💛

After 12.3 overs, CSK are 90/2: WICKET! Moeen Ali departs for 46 off 31. A quality knock from the left-hander. Murugan Ashwin gets the breakthrough for Punjab, with Shahrukh Khan taking the catch in the deep, but Chennai are in firm control. Suresh Raina is the new batsman.
After 13 overs, CSK are 84/1: Two more fours for Chennai! One thanks to a classy drive from Faf and one thanks to over-throws from Pooran. Ten runs from that Richardson over. CSK need 23 off 48.
Moeen has shown good intent in this innings, attacked 44% of the time, the highest of all the CSK batsmen today. He's ridden his luck a bit though, with a false shot percentage of 26%, the second highest in the match behind du Plessis. #IPL2021
— The CricViz Analyst (@cricvizanalyst) April 16, 2021
After 12 overs, CSK are 74/1: Moeen Ali is timing the ball wonderfully! Two fours for the left-hander in that Mohammed Shami over. The first one was pulled hard and beat the fielder in the deep, the next one was a thumping drive through cover and mid-off. Moeen is batting on 39 off 27. CSK need 33 off 54.
After 10 overs, CSK are 64/1: Another expensive over from Murugan Ashwin, 11 runs from it. The leg-spinner dropped the first one slightly short and Faf du Plessis cut it hard for four.
Pace bowlers still getting some help from this track, but so low is Punjab’s score that Moeen is batting with abandon
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 16, 2021
After 9 overs, CSK are 53/1: Meredith steams in to begin his second over and Moeen smashes it on the rise past cover for four. But the Australian right-arm pacer comes back strong and gives away just two singles in the next five balls. Chennai need 54 off 66.
After 8 overs, CSK are 47/1: Murugan Ashwin joins the attack and gets Moeen Ali’s outside edge but the ball flies past Chris Gayle at slip for four. Ten runs come from that over.
After 7 overs, CSK are 37/1: Arshdeep did well to concede just a single off the first five balls but Moeen pulled the last ball for four. The left-arm pacer is bowling well, though.
After 6 overs, CSK are 32/1: Moeen Ali crunches one past cover for four before Riley Meredith does well to bowl three straight dot balls. But Moeen gains the upper hand again to end the over with a classy punch for four. That’s the end of the poweplay.
After 5 overs, CSK are 24/1: WICKET! Ruturaj Gaikwad is out for 5 off 16. The right-hander just didn’t look comfortable at the crease and pulled one straight to the fielder in the deep. Arshdeep Singh gets PBKS their first wicket. Moeen Ali is the new batsman.
After 4 overs, CSK are 22/0: Brilliant batting from Faf du Plessis! Chennai get a kick-on as the South African opener goes after Jhye Richardson. One four past mid-off, then leg-byes for four, and finally a superb scoop shot for six.
After 3 overs, CSK are 8/0: Another tight over for Punjab, Shami concedes four singles in his second. The Chennai openers are struggling to find the middle of the bat.
After 2 overs, CSK are 4/0: There is certainly life in this pitch for pacers. Richardson gets one to rise sharply from length and surprise Faf. A half chance earlier in the over as Gaikwad’s mistimed shot evaded fielders.

Ben Stokes, who has already been ruled out of IPL, is to have surgery in Leeds. https://t.co/duIWJQy7tT
After 1 over, CSK are 2/0: A couple of LBW appeals in that first over by Shami. The commentators reckon the first one is “just missing” in what could be the understatement of the year. Going way high. Second one much closer. Good start by Shami, a hint of seam that DChahar mentioned.
Target for CSK 107: We have seen teams struggle chase in the run-chases recently (at both venues) but surely 107 should not be a big deal for Chennai in Mumbai?

Deepak Chahar: “There was more seam than swing. We bowled in the right areas. Last year was difficult for our players. The first match was a wakeup call for us and we executed our plans today with the ball.”
Punjab Kings finish with 106/8
It was all CSK in the first half of this match at the Wankhede. Ravindra Jadeja was brilliant in the field, but the star of the show was Deepak Chahar with his sensational opening spell of 4/13.
After 19.1 overs, PBKS are 101/8: WICKET! CSK get the man they wanted and it’s Ravindra Jadeja with another good catch. Shahrukh Khan walks back for 47 off 36. The right-hander can be proud of his effort. Hit some powerful shots. Sam Curran gets the wicket.
After 19 overs, PBKS are 100/7: Superb over from Dwayne Bravo, just four runs from it. Shahrukh Khan decided to take a single off the second ball of the over and Bravo ended up bowling three dot balls to Mohammed Shami.

— Vinayakk (@vinayakkm) April 16, 2021
After 18 overs, PBKS are 96/7: After three expensive overs, Shardul Thakur does well in his last over but Shahrukh Khan manages to get a top-edge for four to end his spell. Thakur finishes with figures of 0/35.
Shahrukh Khan taking some of the momentum out of Chennai Express.

After 16.5 overs, PBKS are 87/7: WICKET! Dwayne Bravo strikes in his first over and Murugan Ashwin is the seventh Punjab batsman to walk back.

After 16 overs, PBKS are 81/6: Shot! Thakur drops it short and Shahrukh pulls it powerfully for four. The right-hander is set now, batting at 34 off 26, and can play a memorable knock for Punjab if he finishes well.
Not a myth. Shahrukh Khan has power
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 16, 2021
After 15 overs, PBKS are 73/6: SIX! Second maximum of the Punjab innings and once again it’s Shahrukh Khan who sends it all the way. The right-hander is doing his reputation a world of good with this knock. Nine runs come from that Moeen Ali over.
After 14 overs, PBKS are 64/6: Ravindra Jadeja finishes with figures of 0/19 from his four overs. He’s been superb so far for Chennai.
Proven fact. Genuine swing both ways with control can undo the best. Super variations. Brilliant @deepak_chahar9 #CSKvsPBKS @IPL #IPL2021 @ChennaiIPL pic.twitter.com/Dn2s8luZj7

After 12.1 overs, PBKS are 57/6: WICKET! And the sixth-wicket partnership for Punjab has ended. Moeen Ali strikes as Jhye Richardson attempts a pull shot and gets clean bowled.
After 12 overs, PBKS are 57/5: Another really quick over from Jadeja. The left-arm spinner kept attacking the stumps but Richardson did well to punch one off the back foot for four.
After 11 overs, PBKS are 52/5: Moeen Ali joins the attack and concedes just four runs in his first over. Some turn there for the off-spinner.

— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) April 16, 2021
After 10 overs, PBKS are 48/5: Ravindra Jadeja zips through his second over and concedes just three runs in it. Punjab will feel they’ve done incredibly well if they can get a-run-a-ball in the second half of their innings.
Smart tactics by CSK..rushing through the overs before the night/ dew effect sets in and the ball starts coming onto the bat better. #CSKvsPBKS

— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 16, 2021
After 8 overs, PBKS are 34/5: Punjab get their first six of the innings as Shahrukh Khan pulls a short ball from Ravindra Jadeja into the stands. The men in red need a lot more of these.

After 4.4 overs, PBKS are 19/4: WICKET! CSK and Deepak Chahar are on fire! Chahar gets his third wicket and second of the over as Nicholas Pooran is out for a two-ball duck! The left-hander hooked it straight to fine-leg. PBKS are in deep trouble!
After 4.2 overs, PBKS are 19/3: WICKET! Another piece of magic from Ravindra Jadeja! Chris Gayle walks back as Deepak Chahar gets his second. The ball looped towards extra cover and Jaddu put in a full-length dive to take the catch. What an athlete!
After 4 overs, PBKS are 18/2: Sam Curran with another quiet over. Punjab have Chris Gayle and Deepak Hooda at the crease now. Hooda was brilliant in the last game, his team needs him to deliver again.

After 2.5 overs, PBKS are 15/2: WICKET! Ravindra Jadeja hits the bullseye and KL Rahul is run-out! A moment of brilliance in the field from one of the best in world cricket. The batsmen tried to steal a single but Jadeja was too quick from cover. Rahul should’ve put in the dive. CSK are all over PBKS!

After 0.4 overs, PBKS are 1/1: WICKET! Mayank Agarwal is out clean bowled for a two-ball duck! An absolute peach of a delivery from Deepak Chahar. It completely squared-up the right-hander.
