The Delhi Police on Sunday said that the body of a 19-year-old Delhi University student from Tripura, who had been reported missing more than a week ago, was recovered from the Yamuna river in the national capital, The Indian Express reported.

Sneha Debnath, a mathematics student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, was living with her family in Delhi’s Paryavaran Complex area. Her family was from Sabroom’s Bhuratali village in South Tripura district.

She had gone missing on July 7 and her family filed a missing person’s complaint on the same day, the newspaper reported. Two days later, the police filed a case under a section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to kidnapping and abduction.

As per the missing person’s complaint, Debnath had told their mother on the morning of July 7 that she was going to drop her friend at the Sarai Rohilla Railway Station, India Today reported.

The complaint said that she had hired a cab and left home at 5.15 am. “When we tried calling her around 8.45 am, her phone was switched off,” India Today quoted the complaint as saying.

The family said that they had contacted her friend, who told them that she had not seen Debnath that morning.

The family had also called the driver of the taxi, the complaint said. “He said he had dropped Sneha at Signature Bridge in Wazirabad,” it added.

On July 8, a suicide note was found in Debnath’s room. Citing the note, unidentified police officials told The Indian Express that she had mentioned that it was her decision to end her life and no one was to blame for it.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan said that the note indicated her intention to jump from Signature Bridge.

The police said that technical surveillance during the investigation had revealed that Debnath’s last location was the Signature Bridge. “Some eyewitnesses said they saw a woman standing on the bridge,” an unidentified police officer told The Indian Express.

Subsequently, a joint search operation was conducted from the Nigam Bodh Ghat to Noida by the National Disaster Response Force and the police.

The body was recovered from the river near the Geeta Colony flyover area, The Indian Express quoted the police as saying.

In a statement on July 11, Debnath’s family said in a statement that they could have known what happened to their daughter “had the CCTV cameras on and around Signature Bridge been functional”, The Indian Express reported.

“This is not just about Sneha, it’s about the safety of every young woman in this city,” the family said.

On Saturday, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha directed the state police to take action.

On Sunday, Saha expressed his condolences to Debnath’s family.

“At the same time, he has ordered a detailed investigation into the matter and instructed Tripura Bhawan to provide necessary assistance,” the chief minister’s office said on social media.
