The Kolkata Police has set up a Special Investigation Team to carry out an inquiry into the alleged rape of a woman at the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta campus, The Telegraph reported on Sunday.

The person accused in the case, a student from Karnataka, was arrested on Saturday. An Alipore court remanded him to police custody until July 19.

However, the woman’s father has claimed that the alleged incident did not take place.

The man had invited the complainant, a student from another institute, to the campus for a counselling session, The Indian Express quoted unidentified police officials as saying.

The two had reportedly met online and later became acquainted over discussions about studies and their careers, The Times of India reported.

The complainant told the police that the man met her at the gate of the institution and asked her not to sign the visitors’ register. He then claimed that he had some work in the boys’ hostel and took her there instead of the counselling venue, The Indian Express reported.

The woman told police that she was given pizza and water, allegedly laced with drugs, after which she lost consciousness and was sexually assaulted.

The complainant claimed that she was semi-conscious for some time before losing consciousness entirely.

She regained consciousness in the evening and found herself alone in the hostel room, The Times of India reported.

She left the campus and contacted a friend, after which they went to the police station together and filed a complaint on Friday.

The police registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to rape and causing harm by poison or other substances with intent to commit another offence, The Indian Express reported.

The police suspect the involvement of four others and have detained them for questioning, according to the newspaper.

The hostel room where the incident occurred has been sealed, and forensic samples have been collected from the scene, The Indian Express reported.

The woman had refused to undergo a medical test 48 hours after the incident, The New Indian Express quoted unidentified police officials as saying on Sunday.

The woman’s father alleged that the police had made her write the complaint.

“I received a call from my daughter around 9.40 pm on Friday,” The Telegraph quoted him as having told reporters on Saturday. “She told me she had fallen from a vehicle, lost consciousness and suffered injuries. Later, I came to know that she was admitted to SSKM Hospital.”

He added: “Nothing of the sort that the police are claiming happened, based on the details I received from my daughter.”

The State Women’s Commission took suo motu cognisance of the incident. The panel’s chairperson Leena Gangopadhyay said they want “the truth to come out”.

“If any social stigma or family pressure is preventing her family from speaking freely, that must be addressed…” Gangopadhyay said.
