Goa: Fireworks banned in nightclubs, hotels days after blaze near Baga beach
A preliminary inquiry said that ‘electric firecrackers’ had set off the fire inside the nightclub Birch by Romeo Lane on December 7.
Days after a fire at a North Goa nightclub left 25 people dead, the district administration on Wednesday barred tourist establishments from using fireworks, sparklers and pyrotechnic devices in their premises, PTI reported.
The order applies to nightclubs, bars and restaurants, hotels, guesthouses, resorts, beach shacks and other such establishments. The South Goa district administration issued a similar order on Tuesday, The Times of India reported.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight on December 7 at Birch by Romeo Lane, a nightclub near Baga beach, killing 20 staff members and five tourists.
A preliminary inquiry has said that “electric firecrackers” set off inside the premises triggered the fire, PTI reported.
The orders by the authorities in North Goa and South Goa banning firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices were issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which allows a district magistrate to issue orders restricting certain activities in order to prevent danger to human life.
Five persons, including the manager of the nightclub, were arrested in connection with the fire. The club’s owners, brothers Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, who were in Delhi when the fire broke out, were also booked. However, the Goa Police said they are believed to have fled the country for Thailand hours after the fire broke out.
On Wednesday, the lawyers for the brothers told a Delhi court that they had not “fled” the country but had gone to Thailand for business reasons.
