A Delhi court on Tuesday remanded Indian Youth Congress National President Uday Bhanu Chib to four days of police custody in connection with a protest at the India AI Impact Summit, reported Bar and Bench.

Chib was summoned for questioning by the Delhi Police on Monday and arrested on Tuesday morning.

This was the eighth arrest in the case, according to The Times of India. The police had also arrested three officials of the Congress’ youth wing, identified as Jitendra Yadav, Raja Gujar and Vimal Ajay Kumar, on Monday.

Yadav, a resident of Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior, is the national coordinator of the Indian Youth Congress, the newspaper reported. Gujar is the president of the youth wing’s Gwalior unit, while Kumar is an office-bearer from Bhind.

On Friday, at least 11 persons staged a protest during the summit.

Following this, the Delhi Police registered a first information report under sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita pertaining to criminal conspiracy, causing hurt to a public servant, assault on a public servant, disobedience of an order and unlawful assembly.

The group had shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held placards alleging that he was “compromised”.

Four party workers were sent to five days of police custody on Saturday.

Producing Chib before Judicial Magistrate First Class Ravi on Tuesday, the Delhi Police alleged that he was the “mastermind” behind the protest, reported PTI.

It also claimed that although Chib was not present at the protest, he was “communicating and monitoring each and everything”. The police also alleged that he knew the incident could lead to a “riot-like” situation, according to the news agency.

Chib said that the police’s allegations were an attempt to “insert riots everywhere”. Calling the protest a “simple act of criticism”, he asked: “Can we not even handle criticism?”

The Delhi Police had on Saturday told the court that the protest was part of a “larger conspiracy” and claimed it was inspired by Nepal’s recent Gen-Z-led agitation. It had alleged that the demonstration was a pre-planned attempt to disrupt the high-profile event at Bharat Mandapam.

The five-day India AI Impact Summit began on February 16 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. It was promoted as a major gathering on artificial intelligence in the Global South, attended by 20 world leaders, technology executives and exhibitors from 30 countries.

The Congress on Tuesday described Chib’s arrest as “brazenly illegal” and said the party stands with him.

“The arrest of Youth Congress President Uday Bhanu Chib and other IYC comrades for bringing this truth before the country is proof of dictatorial tendencies and cowardice,” said party leader Rahul Gandhi.

He added that he was proud of the Youth Congress members who had “fearlessly raised their voices in the interest of the country against the ‘COMPROMISED PM’”.

“Holding a mirror to the truth to power is not a crime, it is patriotism,” said the Congress MP.

His party colleague Jairam Ramesh said that the Congress condemns Chib’s arrest for “what was clearly a peaceful and legitimate protest”.

“This is nothing but the politics of harassment,” Ramesh said in a social media post. “The PM is desperate to divert attention away from the uncomfortable truths about him and his regime that the people of our country have recognised.”

On Sunday, Modi accused the Youth Congress of turning an international event into a platform for “gandi aur nangi [dirty and shameless]” politics.
