At least 10 persons died and several others are feared missing after a boat capsized in the Yamuna river in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura on Friday, India Today reported.

Mathura Deputy Inspector General of Police Shailesh Kumar Pandey said the incident occurred at about 3.15 pm, ANI reported.

The prima facie cause of the accident appeared to be a collision between the boat and a pontoon bridge, Pandey said. The boat was carrying about 25 to 27 persons and was ferrying passengers between Vrindavan and nearby areas.

The impact of the collision caused the reportedly overcrowded vessel to lose balance and overturn in deep water, The Hindu reported.

“Ten…bodies have been recovered from the site,” ANI quoted Pandey as saying.

District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh told The Hindu that 17 persons had been rescued. All those on board were tourists from Punjab, Singh added.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences and directed officials to carry out rescue operations and ensure treatment for the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences and said the local administration was assisting those affected.
