Tamil Nadu rain: Schools, colleges shut, trains delayed in Chennai
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast another spell of heavy showers next week across the state.
Heavy rain continued to pound several parts of Tamil Nadu on Friday under the influence of an active North-East monsoon. At least 48 people have died in the resulting flooding since November 9. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa condoled the deaths, a majority of whom drowned in flood waters. The state government also announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
The Press Trust of India reported heavy flooding of arterial roads in Chennai on Friday, including Anna Salai, Poonamallee High Road and GST Road. Downtown areas around Fort St George and rail services at the Chennai Central Railway Station were also affected by the downpour. Schools, colleges and offices were shut on Friday, reported NDTV. The power supply was disrupted in some areas.
