Seven people are reported to have been killed in a helicopter crash near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, which is the base camp of the Vaishno Devi shrine. NDTV reported the deceased include six pilgrims and the pilot of the helicopter, which belonged to private company Himalayan Heli Services. The police said that all deceased were from Jammu.
According to some media reports, the accident ostensibly took place due to bad fog in the area. Other reports claimed the chopper caught fire mid-air and the pilot averted the crash in a populated area in Katra.
Fog had hit air transport in the area, and many flights were delayed this morning at the Jammu airport. The Vaisno Devi shrine is one of the country’s biggest pilgrimage sites.
