Fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was captured on Friday night in a raid in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Six months earlier, he had escaped a maximum security prison in Mexico, straining its ties with the United States. This is the third time he has been arrested – he escaped two maximum security prisons, in 2001 and 2015. The US has sought his extradition, ABC news said.
Five people were killed and one Mexican marine injured in the shootout. The Mexican Navy said they had acted on a tip. Marines seized two armored vehicles, eight rifles, one handgun and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher at the house.
Guzman is included in at least seven indictments in the US. It has earlier demanded the drug lord’s extradition, and Mexico has said he will need to serve out sentences in there first. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto addressed his nation, congratulating the people responsible for Guzman's capture.
