Four women and a child sleeping on a pavement in South Mumbai were grievously injured after being run over by a speeding Mercedes late Thursday night. The driver, identified as a municipal contractor and businessman, has been arrested by the police, reported CNN-IBN. The injured are being treated at the government-run JJ Hospital. The condition of two is reported to be serious.
The incident occurred around midnight on Mohammed Ali road when Amin Khan drove his white Mercedes, with a Jharkhand number plate, over a pavement and also crashed into a Toyota car, reported India Today.
A Mumbai Police official said, "[The] investigation is happening right know [sic]... However, we are not sure of the number of persons inside the car... It can be determined only after [a] thorough investigation."
The incident occurred a month after Bollywood actor Salman Khan was acquitted by the Bombay High Court in the 2002 hit-and-run case, in which one person was killed and four others injured. All the victims were sleeping on the pavement in a Mumbai suburb.
