Barbie gets a makeover, new dolls will have different body types, hair and skin colour
Mattel’s toy, which became an iconic figure after its 1959 launch, has been facing poor sales for several years now, forcing the company to finally broaden its idea of beauty.
Toy manufacturer Mattel has decided to introduce a wider range of its signature Barbie doll, introducing new versions that are no longer stick thin, white and blonde. The Barbie will now come in “curvy”, “tall” and “petite” sizes, and have seven different skin tones and 24 new hairstyles including an afro and curly red hair. This, according to manufacturers, will allow children to choose a “doll that speaks to them” and will better reflect diversity and a broader view of beauty.
Evelyn Mazzocco, senior vice-president and Barbie’s global general manager, said, “We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand – these new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls (sic) see around them.”
After facing criticism for years for its dolls that promote unhealthy bodies and a hegemonic idea of beauty, the company hopes that branching out will help boost its straggling sales. In October, Mattel announced a 14% drop in Barbie sales, The Guardian reported. According to the Wall Street Journal, Mattel’s total sales fell 6.2% over the last four quarters.
