English cricket body will try red card-style sanctions to combat bad behaviour on field
The rule, proposed by the Marylebone Cricket Club, will be tested in leagues, schools and select universities in the United Kingdom.
The Marylebone Cricket Club, a former governing body of world cricket that is tasked with overseeing the laws of cricket, has decided to try imposing football-style send-offs in an attempt to tackle declining standards of player behaviour. The proposed rule will be tested in leagues, schools and MCC universities in the United Kingdom. Under it, players could be sent off either permanently or temporarily for threatening or using violent language against a player or an umpire.
A green paper produced by the MCC states that, "There is clear evidence, both anecdotally and through increased reports via leagues, that the standards of player behaviour on the cricket field are declining worldwide." The report also stated that five matches in the UK had to be abandoned in 2015 following outbreaks of violence.
