Nine killed in airstrike on Doctors Without Borders hospital in Syria
While there were no immediate reports on the number of casualties, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed Russian warplanes targeted the clinic.
At least nine people, including a child, were killed when a makeshift clinic run by Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders, was destroyed on Monday by an airstrike in the northern Syrian town of Maaret al-Numan. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the aircraft "presumably Russian".
The strikes followed United States President Barack Obama’s appeal to Russia on Sunday to end its Syria campaign. The bombings have hindered efforts to enforce a ceasefire and bring the war in the country to an end, Reuters reported.
On Friday, world powers agreed to a partial ceasefire in Syria within a week, but Russia had said the cessation did not apply to its airstrikes. The Syrian regime, backed by Russian airstrikes, has enhanced its offensive in northern Syria.
