Dipa Karmakar, the first Indian gymnast to ever qualify for the Olympics, won gold in the vaults final at the test event of Rio Games on Monday. The 22-year-old from Tripura finished first in the women's vaults finals scoring 14.833 in her first attempt, reported NDTV. She scored 14.566 in her second and last try. This makes her the first Indian to win a gold medal at global gymnastics competition.

International referee Deepak Kagra said, "No Indian has ever won a gold at a global event earlier and Dipa's gold is the first time this is happening. She has qualified for the Olympics and then has won a gold now. It is fantastic stuff." Earlier at the same event, Karmakar had booked a spot to contest in the Rio Olympic Games 2016, after putting up consistent performances over four apparatus at the Olympic qualification test event in Rio de Janeiro.

To qualify, Karmakar needed to finish among the top 29. International referee Deepak Kagra had told PTI earlier that with a score of 52.698, Karmakar was “100% assured of an Olympic berth”. Coach Bisweshwar Nandi had also explained that as her score was above those of participants from at least three of 33 countries, it is enough for her to qualify for the Rio Olympics, which begin on August 5.
