IPL: Gujarat Lions go top again after beating Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets
A record unbroken partnership of 134 runs between Yusuf Pathan and Shakob Al Hasan wasn't enough for KKR to beat their guests at home.
A half-century from Dinesh Karthick and some useful knocks from Brendon McCullum (29 off 24 balls), Dwayne Smith (27 off 18 balls) and Aaron Finch (29 off 10 balls) helped Gujarat Lions beat the Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets at Eden Gardens in the 2016 Indian Premier League on Sunday. The win broke a three-match losing streak for Gujarat and propelled them to the top of the table.
Earlier, a record unbroken partnership of 134 runs between Yusuf Pathan (63 off 41 balls) and Shakib Al Hasan (66 not out off 49 balls) lifted KKR to 158/4 after they were reeling at 24/4 in the Powerplay. This was the highest fifth-wicket partnership in the tournament's history, reported PTI. For Gujarat, Praveen Kumar was the pick of the bowlers, giving away only 19 runs and taking two wickets in his four overs.
Gujarat, however, barely struggled in the chase, as everyone but captain Suresh Raina (14) contributed to the team's cause. The visitors strolled home with 12 balls remaining, as Karthik top-scored with 51 off 29 balls. Kolkata's loss dropped them to third in the table.
