The government of Haryana has heightened security arrangements in the state, anticipating violence during the Jat agitation that restarted on Sunday. At least 48 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed; section 144, which prohibits more than five people from gathering in an area, has been imposed in all districts, including Hisar, Rohtak, Jind and Ambala, The Indian Express reported.

As an additional security measure, internet and bulk SMS services have been blocked in Sonepat district with immediate effect. The restriction will remain in force until further notice. These services could be used to spread misinformation and rumours and also to push for activities such as roadblocks, vandalism and disruption of supply of food and essential services, District Magistrate of Sonepat K Makarand Pandurang said.

Security at Munak Canal, the primary source of water to Delhi, and along the western Yamuna Canal has also been upped. The state has requested for additional companies of paramilitary forces. Haryana Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Ram Niwas said the state has appealed to people to keep their protest peaceful. The gram and khap panchayats concerned have assured the government cooperation to maintain law and order, he added.

National president of the Akhil Bharatiya Jat Aaraskhan Sangharsh Samiti, Yashpal Malik, had announced on May 29 that it will organise a peaceful agitation, the “Jat Nyay” rally. The demonstration is to mark their protest against the state for not releasing those arrested during the violent stir in February, as promised, and not providing compensation for those who were killed or injured. While he had emphasised that the group will hold a peaceful rally, Malik warned that “protesters are free to take their call” if police retaliate or resort to violence try to stop their protest.
