Met department says 89% of India has received normal to excess rainfall so far
Madhya Pradesh and Assam, and Nashik in Maharashtra have witnessed an incessant downpour for the past 48 hours, triggering floods.
India has received more or less normal rainfall in this monsoon, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday. Overall, the country has received 254 mm of rain between June 1 and July 10, about 1% more than the estimated figure of 251 mm.
Around 63% of the country received normal rainfall, while 26% recorded excess downpour leading to floods in places such as Nashik in Maharashtra, as well as Madhya Pradesh and Assam. Regions such as Gujarat, Kutch, Saurashtra and the entire Northeast, barring Sikkim, on the other hand, have received deficit rainfall. The weathermen said conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into parts of Kutch and West Rajasthan in the next 48 hours, reported CNN News18.
Meanwhile, the toll from floods in Madhya Pradesh and Assam climbed to 17. Nashik district in Mahasrashtra, recorded 991 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, triggering floods in the Godavari river and lifting the water level in Gangapur dam and other reservoirs. The meteorological department has predicted heavy showers in next 24 hours, reported PTI. According to NDTV, heavy rainfall is likely at some places in Odisha owing to a low pressure area formed over Jharkhand. Last week, around 30 people died due to a cloudburst in Uttarakhand.
