Manipur activist Irom Sharmila is expected to break her 16-year-long fast against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act on Tuesday. The 44-year-old is likely to make the symbolic gesture at the Imphal court, where she is routinely tried for attempt to suicide. She had made the announcement on July 26, saying she would end her fast on August 9, the date on which her next hearing was scheduled.

However, hours before the hearing, her supporters and family have maintained silence on the proceedings or her plan of action. Sharmila, who has been confined to a hospital bed for attempted suicide and fed through a tube all these years, had also announced her decision to contest the Manipur elections and marry her long-time partner. She is likely to make a statement on these developments later today. Insurgent groups in Manipur, has however, warned her against ending the hunger strike.
